Talk Morgan Forums Morgan Sports Cars Classic Morgans (pre-CX) My roadster loaned to my 21 year old son!!!!!

After a massive amount of persuasion from Josh my 21 year old I relented, and loaned him my lovely blemishless almost new roadster for 4 hours. He is a good competant driver having passed his test first time some 4 years ago. That said, it still raised hairs on the back of the neck to see him and my little beauty speed of into the distance.
No suprise then to get a call 3 hours later from him marooned on the side of the A3 with a detached accelerator cable, going no where fast or slow!!---How & Why?
With the car returned on a flat bed truck, I now have the fun of reattaching the cable to pedal. Having looked at the small space available I dont know how the hell I am going to refit this vital piece of equipement.I imagine the first thing will be the removal of the steering column guard? I dont even know what the top of the damn pedal looks like!
Any ideas or advice please on this detail? ---(& NOT ABOUT LOANING OUT THE CAR!!!)---I know I am a softy---so dont rub it in!

Are you MAD?

The throttle cable is conventional - the cable comes through the bulkhead in a small box. Look under the bonnet and all should become clear. I suggest your son fixes this as pennance.......

In fairness to him, it may have just been a coincidence; however, he could have also been taking "pedal to the metal" literally and snapped the cable as a result.

Well 3-hours of this should have given your Roadster a good Italian tune David ...

There was a thread from Dave W some months ago on the lubrication of the cable, especially for the older car. Shouldn't happen on something built recently, thoughts of the Toyota nightmare spring to mind.
On the other issue of the car loan, I suspect we will all face the same dilemma at some stage. My daughter is 20 and constantly asks the same question. My friend gave his son-in-law his Roadster for use on their wedding day. He said it was bad enough worrying about his speech.

I can still remember being 21. It involved wheelspin starts, snatched gearchanges, no regard for speed limits. cornering on the edge. I once had all four wheels well off the ground at 60mph, when an unexpected hump backed bridge appeared from nowhere.....
I survived because I didn't have more than 70bhp. In a Roadster I would probably not have survived long.
21 year olds have no fear. That's my experience. I wouldn't lend my Roadster to anybody - even a 21 year old leggy blonde on a dead cert payback.........

But what if the payback was in cash and covered the cost of a new Roadster?

( I wouldn't because you would then have to spend about three years fettling the new car to iron out all the glitches (and that's not including the cost of all that neoprene!)

Actually he is only on my insurance for a week (£25)as a named driver---so the fact that the car has not now been available for the rest of the week, he can blame it on, guess who? So DaveW I am not completely MAD----only partially!!!!
