I argue why does one retire so early ?
I'm kind of with you. I flippin' love my job, there hasn't been a day in the last 35 years when I haven't been eager to get to work. But on the other hand, there's loads of other stuff I also want to do - mainly learning new skills, playing more music, and doing more gardening. So I've decided to drop to 3 days a week and see how it goes. But I can't imagine stopping work completely, there's so much cool stuff going on out there, who wouldn't want to be a part of it?

Well it has finally come around, my last day at work. Time to return the laptop transfer the phone back to my name and remove the company email address from all electronic devices. What will I do. I guess the first thing is to have a bit of a chill out break and make some lists on how to survive on 25% of your previous salary. Work out which of the 5 pages of jobs  has written are really essential and then write my own to do. Strangely the thing that scares me most is how I will cope with the lack of demand that work put on me. I will probably ring the work help line 20 times in the first week asking why I am not receiving any emails. The advice I have is that I will be very busy for a while and then its into the caravan and off around Australia. You have a partner and if you like doing things together then I think there's little danger of you falling into some post-work hole (would that be a post-hole?) What I noticed after leaving full time employment and entering part-time self-employment is the lack of an externally imposed structure in my day. You're right to worry about this but it will soon pass and you can make your own pace. But I think we all need a "sense of achievement" even in retirement and this still requires a bit of self discipline. In a few months there will be no need for me to work anymore i.e. financially. But I'm currently planning a new work project because I know I will enjoy doing it. You might find the same urge arises - or not - but the great thing is you have choice and time . And a Morgan!!

Most of the time I enjoyed my jobs. I've seen the world on company expenses, met interesting people and completed a lot of challenging projects. Now I'm self employed, have more time available and an even better income. I hope for many more years of business.

Now I'm self employed, have more time available and an even better income. I hope for many more years of business. Definitely, I've been self-employed for 12 years now, and wouldn't willingly go back to working for someone else.

Congratulations. The feeling you get that first morning when you wake up and realise you can do whatever you want is terrific ... and the best thing is you get it every morning!

Definitely, I've been self-employed for 12 years now, and wouldn't willingly go back to working for someone else.
I've been self employed for practically all of my working life, and us such am probably unemployable. We're trying to get our business to almost run itself, with only the occasional nudge on the tiller from us. If we can make that work, why would we retire ?

Congratulations. Your biggest problem will be that everyone will assume you have time on your hands and come up with things for you to do. It won't be long and you will be wondering how you ever found time to do everything while you were working. This is why every retired man needs a shed  7 years retired. This statement sums it up for me. Especially the first sentence !!!

Graeme. Enjoy your retirement and remember that every day from now on is a bonus. The best thing for me, is being able to spend more time with friends and not having to leave them to rush back to work.

We all live too short a life, yes, it is nice to have a satisfying and rewarding job. I enjoyed my working life, it was most interesting working for a large global company and it came with many opportunities to travel international, meet many interesting customers , colleagues. Do I miss it, not at all. There is plenty of life after work, trying to catch up on the missed time with family, grandchildren and friends, they are far more important than work ever was, I now realise that. Am I missed at work sure,, when colleagues reflect on good times while standing around the coffee machine or if I call in. Was I replaced ofcourse by a different person who does the job differently, will they survive ofcourse.

Congrats on your Retirement.
I am enjoying mine. Its still taking time tho to come to terms with not working. But I am getting there!!
I miss work - but not the intensity of it.
