So my S1 currently has 225/40/18 tyres fitted all round, I note after some extensive searching and reading that a lot of people have fitted wider tyres to the rear (Morgan themselves also did this on the later cars).

Question is what can you fit to the rear of these, and does it help tame the rather tail happy rear end - or does it just make it more snappy?

The information I have found seems to range from fitting 245/35/18s at the rear to 255/35/18s...

Any help is appreciated, I don't want to order tyres that do not fit!

My S3 has 245s on the rear as standard.

Personally I'd stick to the 225's for road use. It'll be harder to catch when it eventually lets go on the wide tyres. Perhaps someone who has fitted them will come along with their personal experience. I'm sticking to the 225's on mine.

It would also be interesting to compare rim width...

My Plus 8/Aero S4 Chassis has 225 front, 245 at the rear, both on 8.5" rims.
What is the rim width on the S1?

On the S4 the rim width is the same, front and back and is correct for 245 tyres but at the front the 225 is the narrowest possible tyre allows on the rim, with the result that the wheel rim is the widest point... Ideally the front wheels would be 7.5" wide, not the 8.5" used.

I'm no expert, but it does seem to me that for road use fitting optimal tyre/wheel combination will lead to a better ride and grip.

Ride quality seems to be spoilt by low profile tyres , are 50 or 60 profiles available ? Only smooth tarmac solves the problem at present , are any recent sports cars shod with 50-60 profiles to avoid thumping on all but perfect roads which are rare ?

I am unsure of the rim width on the S1, it would be interesting to find out.
I have a feeling they are 8.0" wide, as on 225 tyres the rim does not protrude.

My thoughts were if all the later vehicles had wider rear tyres it might have been done during the Morgan "development" cycle to improve the handling and make it more neutral - hence my interest. (Plus wide tyres always look good!)

The front discs on the later Aeros are so large that the smallest wheel size possible is 18". These can take a 45 profile tyre, nothing taller!

The Aeromax wheel in 19", which means 35 profile.

You may well be right. Talking to Image Wheels they suggested 8" front wheels would be better with 225s, but some tyre makers web sites advise 7.5 as optimal with 225s.

Interesting, I am sure there are reasons as to why certain wheel sizes are suited to certain tyres, guessing it is to do with the stretch of the tyre as fitted and how it performs under cornering flex/load.

Need to find somebody with a spare S1 wheel to measure..*heads to classifieds*
