I can assure you it will beat the A9 hands down. Definitely do it in the Mog.

I did a wonderful island hopping trip through the Outer Hebrides in Molly my previous Plus 4 in 2014. Highlights:
Stopped at Dumfries House on the way up. Over to Arran and drove around the island (great road) & out the other side to drive round the Mull of Kintyre (amazing drive) - up to the beautifully simple Kilberry Inn From Oban out to Castlebay on Barra and then several days up through the islands via ferries and causeways (loved Harris as my favourite). Back from Lewis down to Skye and then cross country to Duns to visit the Jim Clark Museum (my boyhood hero).
Planning a North Coast 500 trip with two chums in Morgans in 2018 or 2019 with me in my ARP4 Morag. Why Morag? The name given to the Nessie like monster said to live in Loch Morar (ARP4 - a fire breathing monster lurking under the surface).
Enjoy - you will have a great time and my experience in Scotland was don't worry about the roads. If you like your golf I would recommend in the Hebrides; Barra (bonkers little course with electric fences and personnel gates around the greens to stop the cattle); Harris - stunning views; and Askernish on South Uist - one of my favourites ever.

Can't help thinking you'd be missing out big time if you just went from Fort Augustus direct to Ullapool.
Why not go via Eilan Donan, Applecross (via the Bealach na Ba), Shieldaig, Torridon, Kinlochewe and Garve?
242 miles of absolutely stonking scenery and wonderful roads. I've plotted this route so let's hope the navigator can cope with it! Thanks

Oddly enough I played with a chap yesterday who was wearing an Askernish sweater! His favourite too !

Doing the Scottish 500 next Saturday with Linmog - about twelve cars. Bought a special flag to fly when the roof is down so watch out for me if you see the convoy. Probably look like Nicola Sturgeons staff car! Special thanks to chopper for getting the BBcode photo system to worK FLAG by David Haigh, on Flickr

Funnily enough Bob, according to google you could do it from my house in 23 hours 54 minutes, so even time for a toilet break, but taking a week so we can stop for a wee dram now and again. screencapture-google-co-uk-maps-dir-Barn...b768c3-0xc2476c by David Haigh, on Flickr

if you need help to made the road map file in KML or GPX let me know i have the knowhow for do it finger in nose (i know is not polite) Chester, this seems to say that you know how to plan a journey into a satnav, rather than use their rather primitive features. What can you advise, please? Where do I put my finger? rgds Stuart
