Agree, complete and utter nonsense when you see the thousands of large diesel lorries and artics covering hundreds of thousands miles a day on the UK's roads alone

But that's big business

In fairness, the big HGV's are far stricter on emissions than any air cooled v-twin assuming they're not old vehicles. The unfairness comes with larger countries still disbelieving of the need for clean air.

With the M3W I would assume Morgan are tossing the eligibility for compliance back to S&S as they are the manufacturer. This emissions compliance is what is driving the agenda for all automotive engines, and it's easy to imagine water cooling coming into play with the M3W.

The F series three wheelers used water cooled Ford engines, so it would fit historically if a smaller, water cooled turbo charged engine drove that rear wheel in the future maybe?

Hi, Steve,

Me, too. As above, i was week 17. I fear, however, that even September is dubious as MMC have to wait for signoff following official testing and i was told that September is '...subject to being in the hands of the government...'. But i will remain optimistic! Chris

Steve I of course agree about the F4 heritage and it more than crossed my mind when I was struggling with my M3W that maybe the start point with the big S&S was wrong from the kick off.

BUT the big attraction for me was the Bike Engined trike!

Having said that IF IF IF MMC were to go to a water cooled F4 lookalike I would be very interested.

My three Hinckley Bonnies and Street Triple all had water cooling and my HD Street Rod - although the latter did look very cumbersome.
And so too did my two Scotts - 1938 and 1926 respectively - nothing is new!!

The debate and conjecture rumbles forwards!! innocent

Just recalled the new Caterham 160 uses a three cylinder Suzuki Turbo and very nice it is too!

Is "Trumplethinskin" spelled correctly?

Whilst there is no excuse for Morgan not being well aware of the Euro 4 specification being compulsory from the 1st of January 2017 I feel the issue is more complex than simple emissions.

On emissions alone the S&S engine probably meets requirements if fitted with the appropriate catalytic converter, however the electronics requirements probably means a completely new ECU as part of the Euro 4 spec is stage one OBD diagnostics. This probably means a second O2 (or sonda lambda) sensor after the cat and the famous MIL light if the cat is not functioning to spec. There is also the issue of fuel vapours but I would imagine that the Californian laws already require carbon canisters so that should not be a major issue except for obtaining the test certificates for EU certification.

There is also the issue of ABS which I think is now compulsory for all new motorcycles over 125CC. I'm having trouble finding information on this issue and I can't determine if it applies to 3 wheelers (I believe it does) and if there are exemptions for small volume producers. If it does not already apply it will soon.

All this means a huge amount of work on new electronic systems and gaining the appropriate certificates of compliance. Not something that can be done overnight.

Any dealers in the EU zone that had M3Ws on the floor should have registered them before the end of December or they may have problems getting them registered. As at this moment the UK is still in the EU and I suppose the same rules apply unless the local registration authority is prepared to allow something to slip through.

While they are sorting out the emissions it gives them plenty of time to develop a stronger frame to hang it all in hide...
