An ex work colleague was well into cycling, even competitive. She stated that cyclists were encouraged to ride side by side to make motorists wait for more room to pass. A single file would mean more motorists squeezing past very close.
Locally, cycle paths have been put in as part of the national cycle track initiative. One road had roadworks and tailbacks for months. Work extending it still goes on. In the last few months I have seen less than half a dozen cyclists there.

What would be an 'inappropriate road' for a cyclist? In the UK they would be allowed on any public highway except a motorway.

And why do you care what they are wearing?

Since you are a fortunate survivor of a two-wheeled accident that wasn't your fault, I am surprised at the antipathy you seem to hold towards your fellow road users on two wheels.

And yes, we get many inconsiderate cyclists in the UK... just like we get inconsiderate car, van, lorry drivers. Hell, I even saw a video on here this week of an inconsiderate Morgan driver... whatever next?

I tend to agree with you.... I often feel the same as I watch these middle aged men, who think they're in the Tour de France, hold up the traffic as they pursue their hobby on the narrow lanes around me. We quite often have organised road races on open roads too - if cars did the same, we'd be arrested.

A good number of years ago a fellow Gold Wing rider nearly pulled out of a side turning into the side of an HGV trailer for just the same reason Keith.
Fortunately a toot of horn from another group rider made him pause and then see the wagon...

Failure to observe properly is so easy to do. Many years ago when I worked in Bristol I was driving down the A46 and came up behind a slower car.

I had been followed by a dark blue Ford Sierra for the last 5 miles or so, and when an overtaking opportunity arose I indicated, checked my mirror, saw that the dark blue Sierra was still behind me, and pulled out - very nearly sideswiping another dark blue Sierra that was making the overtake too!

I hadn't spotted that there were two Sierras behind me, both the same colour.

Re Cyclists. I travel to work on a busy single carriageway where every car is held up every day by a single dopey cyclist (who doesn't wear a helmet). How he must laugh! I wonder if he'll find his peace in one of the roadside ditches.

However, what does irritate me is when there is a cycle path alongside the road, for obvious reasons, and a cyclist doesn't use it.

I never wanted to moan about cyclists, in my younger day I cycled a lot, these were the pre Lycra days before Sir Bradley turned every middle age man with a pending crisis into wanna be Team sky members.
But my god do some of them really get my goat, we probably suffer more than most down here on the Surrey/Sussex border now known as Lycra heaven (or hell), they are out in their hundreds, honestly I do not exaggerate. Box Hill, once a rather splendid Morgan drive on an early morning has become a virtual no go area for cars, any cars as you have to stop, pull over, pass etc every few yards. They come barreling down the hill stopping for no one and of course if a car was to hit one of them guess who would be to blame. Then we have the road races, regularly around here on a Sunday through the summer with their signage and marshals and hundreds of riders causing havoc, they virtually take over the road and don't pay anything toward it. Not least the morning commute, trying to get over the Surrey Hills on a say Tuesday morning, trying to get to work, delayed endlessly because some 10 cars up a sole lycra clad moron is trying to ride up a 1 in 4 on a busy route at 7am in the morning....why can't he stay at home and play with his lego?

How many cyclists do you know who don't own a car? The only one I can think of is our local Green councillor, and he never dresses in Lycra or gets in anyone's way.

On a friendlier note, I had a lovely exchange with a motorcyclist on my way into work this morning. Stopped at a traffic light where I was in the right-hand of two lanes going straight on, with a separate right-turn lane to my right, I saw a biker approaching in my rear view mirror with his right turn indicator flashing. When he stopped behind me (filtering and lane-splitting is not allowed here, though right turns on a red light are permitted) I put my hand up and did that "your indicator is on" thing of opening and closing my fist. In my mirror I saw the momentary confusion on his face, then he looked down, obviously saw the telltale, turned his indicator off, and gave me a thumbs-up sign. At the next light he drew up alongside and, with a big smile, thanked me for letting him know.

It's the beginning of biking season here, lots of people who've just de-winterised their machines are now riding to work in the mornings - I guess non-self-cancelling indicators take a while to get used to again!
