I agree that it's important to avoid stressing the windscreen, but I've never heard anyone advising securing the rear first. Are you sure you were listening carefully to your dealer, or is it possible you misunderstood what he was telling you in your excitement?

Whether one has the Easy-up hood, the Trad hood, or a Simmonds hood, the procedure is the same - fix it at the front, then clip down the back.

Similarly, when releasing you undo the rear first to take the tension off, then remove from the windscreen.

It's the way I've always done it on my car (first with a traditional hood, now with a Simmonds) and in 17 years I've not had a problem.

Sounds like the dimmer control for the instrument lights to me.

I have a trad hood.
I suppose it could be that my dealer was standing on the passenger side when he showed me, and he mistook the back of the car for the front. Sounds plausible? I'm sure I was listening.
Anyway, if this is the opinion of you all, everyone does

upwards- front first then rear
downwards - rear first then front - I'll give that a go

I have 4 louvered outlets, 2 easily visible below dash and 2 more hidden further back in footwell.

Tim, with an Easy-up, undo the two Tennax fasteners, one each side, before releasing the rear.
Similarly they are the last to be fitted when putting the hood up.

Same as with a trad or simmonds hood. I count those as in the 'rear' group rather than in the 'windscreen' group.

I'm sure I was advised to fasten the rear first on my trad hood. However I normally fix the rear press studs last, and vice verser.

I think I'd really struggle to do the rear inner fastens with the front in place first.

Need swivel pivots.......

For trad hoods, especially in cold weather, I completely agree. They turn the exercise from a nightmare of straining and broken fingernails into a simple two-minute job. A marvellous idea.

I also appreciate the reminder Graham, it's been so long since I used the hood - mainly because BHM showed me how to fold and stow it so neatly under the tonneau cover that I didn't want to disturb it. A few showers endured is a small price to pay for a neat cover - I always make it look like a pram!

When I asked about this a few years ago, "rear first" was the consensus: Technique for fitting the hood? (1980 4/4).

The handbook for my car agrees:

Hood

When erecting the hood, always fix the eyelets in the back curtain over the turn-
buttons first and then fix snaps across the top of the windscreen, making sure the
sealing pipe runs along the back of the screen. If secured at the front first some
strain will be necessary to pull the eyelets over the turn-buttons, which in time
will pull away from the fabric.

However, it is recommended that if the hood is tight when dismantling it is advisable
to release it at the turn-buttons, which avoids straining at the eyelets.


In reality I’ve found by far the best way is to get someone with younger muscles than mine to do it! My daughter’s fiancé can secure the thing in no time, in seemingly any order.
