For the first time since owning the car - 5 years. I have decided to take the front wheels off myself to have them refurburbed after some minor kerbing. This is really pathetic as in my youth I would think nothing of stripping an engine, replacing a clutch etc all in a weekend.
My question, when undoing the retaining grub screw on the hub nut, does this come fully out. Mine seem to unscrew four turns and then stop, are they retained or is something stopping my grub screws coming out ?
Thanks for any advice.

Graham

mine will/do come fully out.

I suspect if they have not been off too often that they may have a little corrosion between the mag. alloy and the steel grub screw confused2

Maybe some penetrating fluid to loosen up any muck and then I always apply a little Copaslip to them when re-inserting.

Don't forget to mark the wheels and nuts and keep them specific to the axle otherwise the grub screws might not match up - with disastrous consequences.... scared

Also , there is quite a bit of info. on here re. re-furbing the wheels (when you get 'em off!) as Magnesium alloys can be tricky/expensive to have done properly.

James,
Thanks for the reply. So WD40 is a wonderful thing. Gradually eased them out all the while expecting a stripped thread. Seems there was a fair amount of metallic gunk in the threads - bit worrying, anyway they are now out. Next inevitable issue is raising enough torque to undo the wheel nuts. No chance using the factory supplied bar, will have to borrow Alan Claridge's scaffold pole. Heaven knows how we might cope with a puncture in deepest south of France if the gunk can doesn't work!
Anyway advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Graham

I have a couple of other tips which might be useful. Note how far in the grub screw is, this will give you confidence later when your replace the wheel that the grub screw has gone fully into the slot. Also as James has said, if you mix the wheel nuts up the grub screw hole is unlikely to match the slot and "wheel departure" could occur. A further tip is when you remove the nut, they usually a require serious jolt, find someone to keep their foot on the brake this helps greatly. The long bar also makes it easy, I carry a small sledge hammer for the longer trip.

Lightshpere,
Again, thanks for the invaluable advice. Maybe a large sledgehammer for the boot.
Also considering investing in something similar to your mother of all torque wrenchs's, (MOAT?)

The brute I have was a conversion from a bar that was supplied after market for a Roadster I had. I then got a S1 wheel wrench welded onto the end. Not the cheapest conversion, the wheel wrench alone cost £150

I have a 3/4" drive Draper extending offset wrench which extends from 0.3m to 0.6 & 0.9m. My weight is 85kg, so at 0.6m that is 500Nm torque, just over the recommended setting. Can extend to 0.9m to break the resistance though. I also have one of the 3/4" socket spinner adaptor tools from eBay. Not used either in anger, but should work and fits easily in the boot

So thanks one and all.
Just before I ordered the Draper extension recommended by Volvo 60s60, I did some quick arithmetic and converted 500nm torque to approximatley one graham mcneillie sitting at the end of a 2ft lever. The rather pathetic bar supplied by the factory is something around 2ft long, so I gave it one last shot and standing on the end of the bar and giving it a bit of a wiggle (possibly a scientific term for jerk or d3y/dx3), the wheel nut gave up the struggle and came smoothly undone.
So after all this I can take a front wheel nut of an aero, what next with my new born technical skills - maybe jack the car up and take the wheel off!
Thanks again for the advice, fantastic supportive community

- unfortunately, you will now be barred from all MMC premises/events/offers as it clearly states in the S1 owners handbook that the car must be returned to an authorised dealer to have a wheel removed..... confused

You couldn't make this stuff up !!
