We arrived at night & our first sight was from a helicopter. That was unbelievable. It is an awesome sight. Apparently Rhode Island fits in it as does Switzerland!

Hannes, it varies by state. Most are :-
* 20 mph by schools when they are open
* 35 mph in town
* major roads not motorways 45 or 55 mph and a lot of the original route 66 are these roads
* Motorways (Interstates) 70 or 75. Most were 75 but I think it was Missouri that was 70. Around big cities like LA, St Louis & Chicago they reduce to 65 or even 45 but the drivers ignored that.

10 years ago I drove over the Golden gate bridge north and most cars where doing at least 90 mph and legally on their mobiles as they don't see it as a problem !

Thanks a lot, John, very nice photos, some of the area in the West starting at Flagstaff I know but never made the Route 66. Really looks like worth doing it in the future.

Regarding your Mustang, in October 2015 we rentend a Mustang Convertible at the East coast for an Indian Summer tour. I liked the car very much in terms of looks, build quality and ride behave. But we had the V6 3.7 Engine, the only option possible at that time by the rent company and I can strongly recommend anyone never ever to rent her with that V6 engine if you could have another choice.
Even if this engine works in the Roadster as some TMM state here, the Mustang has no power and torque at all below 4000rpm due to her higher weight. An American friend of me who's buddy works at the Ford engine development department told me, that Ford would have killed the 3.7 V6 years ago but the only reason why this engine is offered and still built is the force of the rent a car companies, among other reasons because it can drive with the worst petrol quality available in the US.
This guy also said, that Ford was aware about the usually very nasty remote behave of most petrol turbo engines and therefore they spent many time and money to reach a quick response of the 2.3 turbo engine, at the end, he said, with better results than they hoped to get.

So I have two Q,
does this engine really feels responsive...and, what was your MPG during your trip. I know I should add some petrol to the number you might tell because it is a difference if you drive in the middle west of the USA or in Cologne/hilly Eifel area. Thanks.
We are thinking about an every day fun car for my wife and a "young" but used Mustang 2.3 or the MX5 are on the short list.

Thanks John, great photos and an interesting trip. Why did you decide to do it in reverse?

We did it some 12-years+ ago with Cranmog, we shipped our Mog's over and took 6-weeks over it so plenty of side trips. It was nice to see the Wigwam Hotel, though they only had wigwam's when we stayed.

Definitely one for the bucket list for those that haven't done it, now you need to do the NC500 John as this is the nearest route to 66 we've got!?

Very simple the time window we had was early April. Knowing how crap the weather could be in Chicago I felt West to East would give better weather and it did.
