Thanks a lot, John, very nice photos, some of the area in the West starting at Flagstaff I know but never made the Route 66. Really looks like worth doing it in the future.
Regarding your Mustang, in October 2015 we rentend a Mustang Convertible at the East coast for an Indian Summer tour. I liked the car very much in terms of looks, build quality and ride behave. But we had the V6 3.7 Engine, the only option possible at that time by the rent company and I can strongly recommend anyone never ever to rent her with that V6 engine if you could have another choice. Even if this engine works in the Roadster as some TMM state here, the Mustang has no power and torque at all below 4000rpm due to her higher weight. An American friend of me who's buddy works at the Ford engine development department told me, that Ford would have killed the 3.7 V6 years ago but the only reason why this engine is offered and still built is the force of the rent a car companies, among other reasons because it can drive with the worst petrol quality available in the US. This guy also said, that Ford was aware about the usually very nasty remote behave of most petrol turbo engines and therefore they spent many time and money to reach a quick response of the 2.3 turbo engine, at the end, he said, with better results than they hoped to get.
So I have two Q, does this engine really feels responsive...and, what was your MPG during your trip. I know I should add some petrol to the number you might tell because it is a difference if you drive in the middle west of the USA or in Cologne/hilly Eifel area. Thanks. We are thinking about an every day fun car for my wife and a "young" but used Mustang 2.3 or the MX5 are on the short list. I also posted my thoughts on the Stang. Roughly 35-36 mpg and we tended to push it. The engine is very responsive somewhere between a +4 and S1 Roadster. A great car in my opinion.

Thanks John, I just saw your other thread. I will book a testdrive with the 2.3.

I've done most of route 66 on my motorcycle but not all at one time. I've been wanting to do it all at once in a Morgan with my wife. I really can't see why it would take any longer than a week though. Maybe ten day at most with the trip back home to the NW.

We have the A666 here taking you from Manchester to Bolton
I believe if you go down that road backwards you get some subliminal message from the Devil telling you to 'go really fast and ignore the speed cameras'

How long did it take Jack Kerouac's characters? A couple of friends from LA have done it in reverse (IIRC) on motorcycles a good number of years ago. Quite a saga from their reports - particularly bits of the original road that had pretty much vanished - Gold Wings probably aren't the best for when the tarmac runs out

Graham, and it does run out in spades. In theory 85% exists but it is not all joined up. In theory it is 2300-400 miles as it changed a bit over the years. So yes at 240 miles a day you can drive but maybe not enjoy it. There is a very good map you can buy which has the best directions.
Each to there own but we wanted to see things like the Grand Canyon etc.
Kerouac's characters meander about not over route 66 totally and generally from NY to LA via Denver. It isn't frankly the easiest read.

No, I read On the Road years ago (on one of my various voyages). Not easy reading. Did wonder whether to give it another go, but not sure I'd find it any easier now! To me, like touring the Highlands, it is a trip to be enjoyed, not rushed. The smaller back roads are great Morgan diversions for a slow pace of life and often better (as in fewer other people) for local scenery
