Thinking of driving the S1 down to Dublin or Rosslare and doing a ferry from there to Brittany in September for a week in Loire valley ... any ideas from you more experienced chaps or chapesses?

If they have any room left there's a fabulous gite run by Rodger and Margaret John, just outside Saumur called la charpenterie. It is a three gites with pool accommodation which is fantastic. He advertises every month in miscellany and we stayed there for three weeks ten years ago.
We toured the Loire valley visiting all the chateaux and towns along the river. Fantastic accommodation reasonably priced and Rodger even drives you into Saumur for an evening meal so you don't have to drive and can enjoy the wine.

An absolutely excellent Chambres d'Hôtes and Table d'Hôtes for a night or two's stay and evening meals just east of Poitiers.

A wonderfully restored ancient château with very comfortable rooms. Very attractive scenery.

I've always found the Logis de France website very useful for finding good places to stay alone one's route.

You can look along your planned drive and then click on thumbnails of hotels in suitable spots and see if they correspond with your requirements (the site assigns levels of comfort and gastronomic quality of the restaurant). We've tended to favor the ones with a high gastronomic score, and have stayed at some really good and also some very quirky places over the years.
