Hey Guys Among other passes, I want to drive the " Splügenpass", then enter Italy and get back to Switzerland after " Ponteggia". As far as I know a helmet is required in Italy, right? Has anybody experienced being stopped at the border, not wearing a "real" helmet?  pete

I have driven in Italy not knowing helmets were required, we were wearing leather flying helmets and did about 800km in Italy with no issues.

We never been stopped driving in Italy without helmet.
If it's required ? Don't think so.
If we don't know, do you think an Italian policeman knows ?

Road motorcycles regularly from UK to Italy in the 80's and 90's on business and pleasure. Always assumed that helmets were compulsory, and wouldn't have wanted to face the Carabineri (who could be quite officious) without one. Doubt if you would be stopped without one in an M3W though - then again told that all Carabineri have law degrees  Splugen pass was my favourite. Remember return journey to UK one Easter weekend. Brilliant sunshine with generally dry roads and just trickles of melting snow. Then rounding yet another bend near the summit and passing through a tunnel of snow left over from a cleared snowdrift. Very memorable.

We've holidayed in Ravello on the Amalfi Coast quite a few times and many of the locals on scooters in that region at least definitely don't wear helmets! Pretty sure I've seen guys on full motorbikes without them as well but that may say more about the compliance culture in Southern Italy......

We've holidayed in Ravello on the Amalfi Coast quite a few times and many of the locals on scooters in that region at least definitely don't wear helmets! Pretty sure I've seen guys on full motorbikes without them as well but that may say more about the compliance culture in Southern Italy...... Scooters or bikes without helmets: An Italian friend of mine, living in Milano and earning his incom as an attorney, was caught by police without a helmet on his scooter. His bike got confiscated for a year and he had to pay a substancial fine. So be careful! Live in southern Italy is completely different, but also there things can be expensive if worse comes to worse. I would not mind at all to drive the M3W without a helmet when using seatbelts. It's like driving a convertible . You do not need a helmet driving a Piaggio Ape either (the famous Italian 3wheel mini-truck)

The law in Italy is that you must wear a helmet if the 3 wheeler does not have a roof or a "survival cage" (that would mean that your head could not hit the ground in a roll over. It is just possible that the higher roll bars specified for Australia may meet the requirements but the current roll bars certainly do not. Further more if seatbelts are supplied you must wear them. The Ape has a roof and that is why a helmet is not mandatory. Some of the newer ones also have a robust external roll cage. Helmets must be worn in the 3 wheeler trucks without a roof and the police are well aware of this.
There are no ifs and buts about this and it is official that you must wear a helmet and seatbelts in a Morgan 3 wheeler in Italy. You must also have a motorcycle licence, ridiculous as it may seem. If you do not comply with these laws you risk a big fine and having the vehicle sequestered.
Having said that I believe most police and carabinieri would be somewhat ignorant of this and/or perhaps not bother a tourist so you may get away with it, as many have done. The risk however is there and you only need to get pulled up by someone who is stroppy or dislikes tourists and it could really ruin your holiday. The choice as to whether to take the risk or not is up to you.
By the way those scooterists down south risk it as well. A few years back one refused to stop at a roadblock when he was being pulled up for the umpteenth time for not wearing a helmet. Apparently the safety was not on on the officers machine pistol so that when he jumped back out of the way a burst went off. Oops! Our apologies to the widow.

Helmet in Italy: correct but many policeman didn't know it and not only them
Motorbike license needed: Not 100% correct, because M3W is a L5E category and you can drive it with B license if you are older than 21 years old and only in Italian territory ( art 125 CDS comma 2 letter H )

In that case a four wheel Morgan also need to wear a helmet ?? It has no roof and no roll bars.
