All the guides including the DVLA publications, MOT and Police are interpretations of the Road Traffic Act which is worth a read. It certainly does not mention handlebars, steering wheels, engines or the motorcycle rear plates that a lot of UK M3Ws come fitted with from new. Nor does it mention the apparent exemption of American cars in the UK to enable them to display motorcycle plates. Like a lot of UK laws it is a mess.

I came to the same conclusion as Tim and will do the same at MOT time but under the RTA there is as much chance of being prosecuted for not having a front plate on an M3W as being hit by space debris.

If it's car derived why do new drivers need a motocycle licence to drive/ride one?

They need a motorbike license for the rear wheel, and a car license for the 2 front wheels wink

That is a EU ruling, however the UK have exercised the derogation that allows any passer of a car driving test after 19 January 2013 who is aged 21 and over to drive a trike.

From the UK Government website:

If you ride a motorbike or motor tricycle

Motorcycles and motor tricycles registered on or after 1 September 2001 must only display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle.

If you ride a motorbike or motor tricycle registered before 1 September 2001 you can also display a number plate at the front, but you don’t have to.

Motorcycle and motor tricycle number plate numbers should be on 2 lines.

So let's get all those front plates off laugh2

Mine came off the day after I picked it up.

Never had a problem with plod or MOT.

Or the black and silver plate on the rear.
