For what it's worth, I spoke to a friend of mine who owns a BMW repair shopping San Francisco. He said this problem only affects about 10% of the N62 engines. So don't panic quit yet. But it is something to keep an eye on.

But it is something to keep an eye on. Thanks for that - I love getting "rare" expensive problems. The flipside is that my (later model) supercharger hasn't detonated - and remains oil leak free! The Alpina has now been moved to the BMW dealer who will rebuild the engine - a mere 9k (assuming no further Alpina part specific damage) to fix! Sod the little girls, thank heavens for all inclusive warranties.

The Alpina is finally back home - with the garage only left to finalise the bill to the warranty company (copy to me) and the fluids bill to me. First indication are around the 10-12k mark to the warranty company!
The bonus for me is that the car was nudging towards a service - and that has now been done - a full inspection obviously. This means the next oil change is due in 24,000km and an inspection in 60,000km. So in theory it should be back to being cheap to run - apart from the 1,500chf warranty renewal cost.

Tapart from the 1,500chf warranty renewal cost. That's not overexpensive. Can you send me some more details? I may consider it for the 964.

That's a Quality1 extension to the BMW Eurogarantie I got when I bought the car. You can call/email them directly to find out whether they'll do one on the 964.

Update: My bill: 590chf for fluids - oil etc Warranty bill: 8,500chf inc water pump and new air con condenser. 590chf for a full service including fluids is a bargain by Swiss standards - car should be maintenance cost free for another 25,000km

.... I love getting "rare" expensive problems. I understand... do I understand... My +8 motor's vacuum pump leak down to a £5.00 sealing cap but 5.5 hours labour, about £750 inc VAT, to diagnose, strip down, reassemble.
