And thank 109er for his helpful response.

I like the Fiat 124 but they are quite rare in the UK and therefore, not readily available.

The Alfa Spider is another option but again, they are a little thin on the ground and being an Italian car, I do worry about reliability.

I've pm'd Simon with my thoughts on this. For the price of that 1800B - a V8 Roadster is not much more and this one is still on SU's, so nothing hi-tech

MGB's are pretty good except for sticking fuel pumps and batteries if stood idle for long periods. The big advantage is the Heritage shell - so rot shouldn't be an issue. I could also be tempted by a TR6..............

I as offered a very nice 2-owner TR6 recently - it was unrestored but in very nice condition. That is what started this thought process... well that and the sun sunny banghead

I had a drive in a two year old yellow TR6 in 1976, and it left a lasting impression...........
If I'd had the money I might have spent 34 years with Triumphs.
Maybe I had a lucky escape. It might have ended up with a TR7..... scared

Triumph Spitfire (separate chassis, so keeping it for a long period should not be a major problem rot wise) - I ran a 1500 model for a while (under 1549cc so road fund license is cheaper)

Of course, the ultimate, would be an earlier Mog 4/4 laugh2

Pre '73 would be zero rated road fund (at least for the moment - I wonder, with little hope, whether the rolling 25 year limit will return).

(I could still 'B' tempted by an MGB GT, with overdrive, as a daily driver. SWMBO seems to be attracted to Boxsters though... grin2 )

4/4 Sports must be the cheapest way to enjoy top down motoring, if you bought one last year it is still worth what you paid, to enjoy open air motoring for little outlay then forget all the usual [ex BMC/BL] suspects and go XJ-SC /Convertible

I know I'm cheating here because of the 'open top' requirement but if could stretch a point then I wouldn't say no to a good GT6 with a sunroof. Come to that, if I could find one which hadn't succumbed to the dreaded rot I'd take the Triumph Vitesse with that same big engine.

Grand touring, without a doubt - do you have a fuel bowser to follow you around Simon? laugh2

Like the GT6 too, Gerwyn. I still see a red '72 occasionally, that used to belong to a mate who is now in Perth WA. Only recognise it because the reggo on my B Roadster and his GT6 both ended 788K... Always fancied a GT6, but finding a good one compared to finding an MGB, even back then (end '70s beginning of 80s), was difficult.
