I was aged 12 and have vague recollections of how hot it was. Two events, however, are very clearly etched in my memory:

The first is a week spent as a family of five in a borrowed 3-berth caravan at Reculver on the North Kent Coast. The cramped, baking, airless metal box was like 'the oven' that Alec Guinness endured in BOTRK. Not having been away before, I couldn't understand why my mates made such a big deal about holidays - I was pleased to get home.

The second is the Silver Jubilee street party. The late 1950's housing estate I grew up on was a frying pan shaped development, and the handle part was closed to traffic on the day of the street party. A mate's Dad told me it was a mile around the perimeter (looking back, it was probably less) so I resolved to cycle around it 50 times on a bike I had 'borrowed' - took me about 4 hours and I was starving by the time the party started. A couple of years later, I spent my whole Summer's farming job wages on my first racing bike - the start of a love affair.

I could have done with aircon on my golf trolley yesterday!
sunny
It was scorchio indeed.
Several people stopped after 9 holes.
Drank 6 bottles of water going round. Used my Morgan umbrella as a parasol. Had a lovely cooling shower. Long, cold pint of orange juice in the shade on the club patio.
Best part was driving home in the Mog.

In 1976 I was 23. I had an eighteen month old MG Midget with an untraceable intermittent ignition fault. This car broke down more in six months than all my other cars put together. So I sold it just before the heatwave started.

I then had a Dolomite 1850 through the summer, which was fab. The GP was at Brands Hatch (if I recall correctly) and it was baking hot. We didn't bother much with water back then, or suncream, and we drove down to Brands Hatch from Yorkshire when the pub closed, and slept in the car.

Driving home after the race, the sun is in your face round the North Circular, and we were nodding off on the way up the M1.

I wouldn't bother with it all now.............

Oh and just before the GP, I met MrsW to be..................

It's under threat as are a lot of WW2 airfields. There is a proposal to build 1800 houses on it - however there is a lot of local apposement to the plans so I think it's safe for a few years yet.

That's good, I think it's such a shame the way we keep losing airfields.

DaveW , have we any list of the cars you've owned as those first two would have been at the top of the list for many back then ! ?
