I drove Buttertubs Pass on the way south from a Highland bash a few years ago - the week before Tour de France went through... Definitely a great road (even filled with pushbikes), but the weather wasn't as great as in David's photo... Stocked up the cheese in Hawes of course

Lovely evening trip into Dartmouth to see The Dave Hankin Big Band at the Flavel, it was a tribute to Glenn Miller and they are a great band if you like your Miller authentic. https://www.facebook.com/davehankinbigband/It was part of my Birthday treat and it was excellent, one of my neighbours plays with them too so great evening out. We barely needed any lights on the way home at 2230 good day well done.

From our digs near Bainbridge to Richmond then a nice route along Swaledale and over to Hawes. Only realised when we got back that that was Buttertubs pass. Crickey , that is a very nice looking road for a Mog ! Will be going off tomorrow morning through Thetford to Oxborough hall and gardens nearby with Mog people , should be excellent , have put leather bonnet strap back on bonnet !

A great week in the Yorkshire Dales, topped off with a visit to Newark Air Museum complete with a sit inside the cockpit of the Vulcan. Dales roads are proper high-intensity driving, you are constantly braking, accelerating, changing gear. Blind humpback bridges followed immediately by 90 degree bends all on single-carriageway roads mean you need to keep your wits about you!

Great pictures Tim, was it cramped in the Vulcan ? Amazingly so, Richard. How they managed to go on long trips I have no idea, especially the 16-hour mission to the Falklands. 5 crew, but only the pilots had ejector seats. The 3 guys sat in the back had to hope they had a chance to bale out in case of trouble. Sadly on several occasions they didn't get that chance.

That must have been quite a sobering thought about the guys with just chutes, what a thought to have in your head at take off. Could the front cabin guys get up and walk around aft at all, it makes me wonder how they managed to stay awake. An honour to walk around such a significant historical warbird, I think they are prettier than Concorde that Delta is spot on.

Absolutely no room to move around at all. The access ladder comes up behind he pilot's seats. there is then a smaller ladder which enables you to climb up and squeeze through a gap not much more than 12" wide between the seats in order to sit down. Either side of the main access ladder there's a platform about 2 foot square which enables the rear crew to access their seats. 3 abreast, facing backwards, the outer two swivel to enable them to squeeze in. Once you're in, you're going nowhere until you land. I'm a chunky 14 stone, and I reckon I would be at the absolute limit to get in. Anyone heavier, over about 6 foot tall would have no chance of folding themselves into the available space. Apparently the crews with the Blue Steel stand-off nukes were told that in the event of a nuclear war, once they had launched their missiles they were to turn and head south as far as they could and hope to find somewhere to land in friendly territory - the assumption being that there would be nowhere for them to come home to. As you say, sobering stuff.
