Good synopsis. One must consider China's steel making facilities are state of the art, being relatively new. But how they manage their quality control is, as mentioned above, unknown. Sulfur and phosphorous content tend to make steel brittle at temperature extremes,ie below zero F, can't quite remember which is which, I think the sulfur makes if cold short. I also think a huge factor here is joint design, the metallurgical changes in the heat affected zone from welding ie grain growth which makes the fracture look like cast iron, and fatigue stresses, which can be hard to estimate. Using a chrome-moly alloy usually requires post weld heat treatment, difficult and expensive for a small manufacturer. Plain old mild steel is pretty ductile and can take a lot, IF the joint is properly designed to keep the stresses well under the fatigue limits. I still think a broke frame can be welded IF properly reinforced to lower the stresses, including minimizing residual stresses from the welding.
The fracture is not actually at a weld but plumb in the middle between two welds and about 10cm away from each. There looks to be significant corrosion at the fracture site but this may have occurred post fracture. I wonder if anyone ever did finite element analysis on the chassis, as to me it looks like it is due to stress concentration at that point, leading to a fatigue failure but of an inadequate material. It has the classic jagged appearance of a fatigue failure. I was going to suggest Reynolds 531, it would probably be lighter as well.

I was going to suggest Reynolds 531, it would probably be lighter as well. This is an interesting and recurring theme. With over 1000 M3Ws out there, someone must be working on a self-built chassis. Not sure Reynolds 531 is the way to go - it is high ductility (for butting) rather than the highest tensile grade for plain gauge tubing. Makes me wonder what it would cost to have a frame made in Reynolds 531 Manganese/Molybdenum alloy steel. It is light and very strong. True, but Reynolds 531 is not intrinsically that much lighter than other grades of steel - its superiority comes from the fact that it is ductile and suitable for double-butted and triple-butted designs. Car tubular chassis' typically use straight-gauge tubing - but no reason why a butted design couldn't be used. With over 1000 M3Ws out there They were at over 1,700 last Sept so must be closing in on the 2,000th. I think MMC are being OK about chassis with issues as it's not a quick fix to replace it and they need to address each one as it occurs. It is more of a challenge for overseas owners and MMC are improving in how they deal with these. For example, they appear to have done exactly what Wilson wanted in supplying a new chassis for RD Racing to fit even though they are not MMC dealers. How many other car companies would allow any form of corrective or warranty work to be done outside of the dealer network?

Only those that don't have a suitable dealer nearby. Using non-franchised companies for warranty work is frowned upon for good reason. Unless meticulous records are kept, the manufacturer has the right to invalidate future claims on the basis that the warranty work wasn't correctly completed. In this specific case the manufacturer doesn't have a lot of choice and I'm sure it will all turn out well. I have to disagree that the MMC are handling the subject well. They haven't advised owners of the issue. They wait until the chassis fails before acting and then they handle each case differently. They should be pro-active not re-active, especially on a known issue that could result in a serious accident. It's only because of the unique nature of their market and the tolerance of owners that they haven't landed up in a serious problem with this issue.

RD Racing are appointed Morgan Service Dealers as a sub-agency from Marcassus Sport. When you go in there, you see more Morgans than you see in many main dealers. I think there were 4 or 5 plus my M3W. For those of us in the south east of France, Marcassus is a 9 hour or even longer drive away. Maybe OK in an Aero 8 but a 18 hours round journey is a tough trip for us old farts in a three wheelers.

I was just going to add that I have total confidence in RD Racing. I have looked at some of their work. They had re-bodied an alloy long tail lightweight E-Type with all its double curves, beautifully. If they can do things like, the rather crude Three Wheeler should be child's play.
BTW I was looking at a Polaris Slingshot three wheeler today on a rally I was on. The chassis which has doubled longitudinal tubes, so that there are a total of eight fore-aft tubes. They are all frequently cross braced and apparently made from chrome moly steel. It all makes the M3W chassis rather under-designed.

I have been following the evolution of the Slingshot for some time and it certainly is interesting to note the differences in approach to the engineering and development program and with a base price under US$29,000 also looks good value. I was just going to add that I have total confidence in RD Racing. I have looked at some of their work. The Slingshot was certainly quite quick. As I was on my own and could not therefore read the road book and drive, the Slingshot was my designated "Follow Me" vehicle. I was having to work reasonably hard to keep up with it in my 500+ BHP Porsche 911 Turbo S. On the downside, it did not generate nearly as many smiles from people we passed, as the M3W does and its 4 cylinder alloy 2.4L Chevrolet engine sounds rather pedestrian in comparison to my S&S with Garage 56 pipes.
