A Noted Pacific West Race Driver and long time Morgan Owner told Me that I (and others) spend too much time worrying about King Pins and Bushes. Just keep grease in them and drive Your Morgan. By the way Bill, my favourite 'story' from the gentleman concerned was when he claims to have been cut up by some boy racers on the road. He said he pulled alongside at the next stop sign and took his Magnum from the glovebox and with one shot blew away their entire corner suspension........ That and winning every single race he entered had me ignoring his posts  I got Your message Colin. Trying to think of an adequate reply. My brain is not as agile as Yours. But I just did Lisa's 2000 +8 with 55000 Miles. Professionally maintained. Lisa does not grease! They looked like they could easily take 20,000 or more miles. As I had it apart anyway I installed Chrome KP's and new bushes.

My original kingpins were replaced at around 50,000 km. I greased them before and after every long trip but did not grease them during the trip though I usually try to get them greased before the return trip if it is to the UK or somesuch. I would say that on average they are greased every 3,000 km.
The wear was actually starting to affect the steering geometry.
The replacements are stainless and I hope they last a bit longer.

My original kingpins were replaced at around 50,000 km. I greased them before and after every long trip but did not grease them during the trip though I usually try to get them greased before the return trip if it is to the UK or somesuch. I would say that on average they are greased every 3,000 km.
The wear was actually starting to affect the steering geometry.
The replacements are stainless and I hope they last a bit longer. The King Pins I replaced with Hard Chrome/Vesconite were stainless/Devol bush the Factory was using for a while. They came from an Owner who lives in Texas. The bush looked OK but the stainless was well worn out. Not sure how many miles. This Morgan lived on a long gravel/dust road. So far so good for the Hard Chrome Vesconite, BUT I do not know how much His +8 is used. I have 50,000 miles on My Hard Chrome/Vesconite (even did not grease for 2 years), however, No Gravel Roads and the North Western U.S. is one of the wettest places on earth. Vesconite was formulated for pump bushings by South African's for the Mining industry. It uses water for lubrication.

Returning to bronze bushes and either stainless steel or hard chrome pins. Let's assume that the rebound spring area is sealed from the weather - I accept that this is not 100% even with luxury gaiters...............
I can understand that the harder surface will abrade the softer surface, but with grease in between, this should be minimal. But then I presume that if wear takes place, the grease film must break down. So surely there is something which would be superior to grease? Is this only Vesconite?
And finally, what is the metallurgy which drives wear. Is it simply molecules breaking away slowly and building up an abrasive paste in the grease? (assuming no external agents).

The replacements are stainless and I hope they last a bit longer. Correction! The replacements are hard chrome. Good! I will sleep better tonight. As for Vesconite. The only advantage of Vesconite is they are self lubricating (to a degree). Grease makes them better to compete with bronze. If they do (and I am not sure Vesconite does compete better than bronze in a Morgan King Pin situation. Jury still out on Vesconite IMHO! I have use Vesconite for over 10 years and many miles in 2 of My Morgans. On a trip I do not need to crawl under MY Morgan to grease it. That is a big deal for an 87 year old. On the third Morgan I have used Devol bushes and they work OK. I have a Alemite grease gun and plumbing (drilled King Pins) in the cockpit next to the steering column. Just twist the handle a couple of times and I grease the KP/bushes. I have a supply of Chrome King Pins as well as Vesconite bushes. They are not for sale. I am not in the Morgan Business and the Liability of something going wrong is too much for Me. A few years ago when I had assets to protect I had a large Liability Insurance Policy. I no longer have the assets nor the Policy. The US is famous for its "Litigious Legal System".
