I saw a post where somebody in the US changed the rear red fog light to white so that it acts as a white reverse light when you put the fog light switch on. But has anybody actually rewired the rear fog light so that when you put the M3W in reverse it actually turns the light on?

If so, please also let us know if you did anything with the fog light wiring, or if the fog light switch is now just a dead switch.

When my car is finalized at the dealer, i have asked them to swap it out also.
The switch from the gearbox is already fitted. Just change the light and hook it up.

Yes have fitted automatic reversing light although retained fog light in original position. The wiring loom already has a gearbox switched feed to a four way connector behind fog light to supply both or you can choose one or the other. It's plain dumb not to use existing dedicated feed if you want a reversing light.

Check out this thread.

I have mine on the fog lamp switch. Now that i know how easy it is to swap it to work as a true reversing lamp I may move the wires.
