Beth and I and another couple are now planning to visit the other side of the big pond next year. we are both turning 55 years of age, AND it will be out 20th wedding anniversary. We were going to do the Isle of Man TT, but now I think we would like to attend a day or 2 of Goodwood, and then some other tourist posts on our way up to Malverne and the Morgan Factory. So, what else should we see? What are the differences in the Goodwood weekends and what would be best to see? We are pretty confused so far!!
We would greatly appreciate your insights.

In my humble opinion the Revival is the better weekend as its real period racing with everyone dressed the part and simply so much to do and see.
When are you coming and how long are you stopping?

Thanks Mark! We would vary our arrival depending on which Goodwood event we chose. Im thinking a fortnights holiday with 2 days of that eaten up by flying, so 12 days in Europe.

Agree with Mark
The Goodwood Revival is something special. You'll love it
Lots to see, the fun of dressing up, great music and food tents and some fantastic machinery on show
The racing can be spectacular as well
Definitely worth splashing out on - go large!
The only issue is trying to get accommodation close by so be prepared for a 40 minute drive in each day but I guess to you across the pond that's practically like nipping down to the local hardware store

What else should we see while there. Some want to see Cardiff, and Highclare Castle.

I differ from the others. I would say that if you are any sort of biker, then the TT is a must. There simply is nothing like bikes going past you just 10 ft away doing 170mph and the atmosphere of an island packed with 100,000 other bikers is tremendous. That said, its so popular world wide that you will struggle even now to book a hotel and ferry for next year. The Goodwood revival is an occasion and credit to Lord March its really well organised. Planes cars and bikes - not just old cars. The rest of the trip? The Morgan factory is quaint, a time warp. My old university in Oxford is well worth a days visit - dont bother with Cambridge. Its a bit down market really. Americans seem to come in different varieties - African American, Irish American, German American etc so you may want to visit one of the regions like scotland or wales or ireland. Visit your roots etc. Great scenery is in the yorkshire dales, the highlands, mid wales. To me, London is the pits but you may want to do the tourist bits at Buck House, changing of the guard , tower of London etc. If you are into history, its not something we are short of in any region of the UK.

On a past visit, I spent three weekends with two weeks in between. The weekends for car stuff and the weeks themselves for the rest. The weekends included the Goodwood Revival, the Morgan Three Wheeler Club AGM (with a MMC factory visit) and a visit to Beaulieu Transport museum. Leaving the weeks in between for site seeing. Not sure if the timing will out this year or not.
Cheers,
Mark

I'd definitely recommend the Goodwood Revival, we never miss it, took a friend from the States last year and he was blown away.
Highclere is only open to the public a limited number of days each year so you may not be able to visit around the Revival time.
Warwick castle is great too.
If you really want to push the boat out I'd recommend a night at Amberley Castle, it's a real castle that's now a hotel. Not too far from Goodwood, amazing rooms and fantastic food, not cheap though.

What to recommend, rather depends on what you like doing and how much time you want to spend driving rather than doing it. Goodwood is not too far from Brighton (Royal Pavilion) and Portsmouth (Victory, Warrior, Mary Rose). On the way to Malvern you could do Salisbury Cathedral, Bath and the Cotswolds. Once you are at Malvern you are within striking distance of the spectacular castles of North wales, although Ludlow is much closer if you wand a good castle. North of Goodwood just inside the M25 is Brooklands. Really, pick any part of the UK and you will find places of interest/natural beauty not too far away.
