My car is a 1987 4/4 CVH. I know my chassis number but I need to locate it for bureaucratic reasons. I was told it was on the steel cross-member under the seats, and immediately behind the seats rather than in front of them, but I can't see it on the top, front or back of the cross-member under either seat. Any suggestions? Would it be on the underside of the cross-member or somewhere else? I can't access the underside.
Thank you.

It should be pretty clear when you find it. The numbers are about 8 m/m
Just to save you looking for something that may not be there: your car had a new chassis.
I ask because when I replaced the chassis on my 4/4, the new chassis came unstamped.

if it is there will it be on the upper surface of the cross-member, as I look down at it? I can't see it on either the upper or rear surfaces on either the driver's or passenger's sides. Car is a 1987 4/4. The crossmembers look original to my nonexpert eye.

It should be on the upper surface. There's usually just at little trace of distortion around it, depends how hard the fitter at the factory walopped his number stamps.
Sometimes thick paint or powder coat can obscure the numbers though

Got it! Really difficult to see the very faint numbers.
On the upper surface of the crossmember behind the drivers seat.
And even now that I know its there its still difficult to see.
Thanks for your help, Arwyn and Nigel.

The chassis number on my '89 +4 was very difficult to see due to paint on the crossmember. If you want a clear view take out the driver's seat - only 4 bolts. It will also give you a chance to check out the underside seat webbing for splits / sagging which is a common problem on older cars.
