And also How the West was Won x Dee Brown.
I have been interested in Native American Indians since I was a boy and this book is an authority. Full of tribe details and the chronology of the West development.
I now feel even more sorry for the indigenous Indians.
Thanks for the heads up, I shall be interested to read that. The history of the way the native Americans were treated, and the appalling bad faith displayed towards them by the US Government is truly shameful. The way the conflict between settlers and native americans has been portrayed over the years is a clear example of how history gets written by the victors.

Just finished: The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monsarrat
A really good read - I don't know why it has taken so long for me to get round to reading it.

Nearly finished "J.R. Hartley Casts Again"... An excellent follow-up to "Fly Fishing by &c". Next on the list is likely to be "Capturing the Light", a true story of genius, rivalry and the birth of photography, by Roger Watson & Helen Rappaport. It is likely to be interrupted by the small flood of periodicals that start appearing soon after mid-month which extend early into the following month.

Still working my way through Bill Tilman's 7 Mountaineering and Travel books - currently reading the one about the 1938 Everest Expedition. I also highly recommend his Sailing books, about his travels to the Antarctic and Arctic on climbing expeditions on old Bristol Channel Pilot Cutters, particularly Mischief, on which he sailed over 100,000 miles before she sank off Jan Mayen island. Just started Tristan Jones 'Ice' about about sailing in the Arctic. I'm told some of it needs to be taken with 'apinch of salt'! He may have exaggerated his achievements somewhat. Rereading this thread just now, I noticed mention of Maurice Griffiths' East Coast sailing stories - books, I have read a couple of times, and will read again - and Joshua Slocum's Sailing Alone Around the World, which I must reread one day.

Just finished reading "They Fought Alone: The True Story of SOE's Agents in Wartime France" by Maurice Buckmaster. (Buckmaster was OIC SOE)
A fascinating read and fills a few gaps around how things were organised - especially around D-Day.

If you're interested in SOE, Leo Marks' book 'Between silk and cyanide' is one of the best books I've ever read.
Marks was the SOE's code-master. The book is really fascinating and beautifully written.
