They have managed to both keep the farm shop open and sell the land off for housing in Ambridge.

They have closed our local farm shop as an interim measure to make a much larger one.

I don't expect we shall be paying 50 pence per cauliflower when it reopens somehow though.

Agree on the shop local - our veg comes from the fragrant Mel in East Leake and she gets her potatos from Howicks in the next village - we get to watch the spuds grow when we are riding our horses. Lamb comes from the farm where we keep our horses. Only sloth prevents us getting local beef. Local pork is a bit trickier but will be sorted one day.

Ah yes, the only supermarket where you can be looking at the fresh veg, turn around...
..and there it is: a giant of a workshop compressor. Why?

Opportunist profit?

They have realised that it gets the men in the store and lets face it we buy all the extras that the ladies don't, they always stay on list unlike the boys.
They are very good at what they do and both the German stores are growing market share and store numbers in UK faster than anyone else.

We first discovered Aldi when we worked in Germany in the mid 1970's and were impressed with the quality and value of most products. There were no labels or barcodes on the products the girls on the checkout knew the price of every item in the store.

The good news is that Aldi and Lidl have a plan to grow by building directly next to the higher price supermarkets so stealing their business with better value. I have been using Lidl for years. I always think they are a bit reversed to Tesco etc, their own branded goods are often better quality than many of the posh branded stuff. Their meats are as good as most supermarkets general ranges but cheaper.

We like to buy a few things as specials (Friday night made-it-through-the-week celebration) from specialist places like the local butchers and Deli's.

We also like the new Whole Foods chain which I use in the US when travelling. We call it whole paycheck due to its prices but it does have some great stuff and the meats are excellent, better than the butcher.

Our previous favourite for a lot of things was CostCo but as there are two of us it is hard to consume the volumes you need to purchase ! Their Aberdeen angus sirloin steaks are cut nice and thick and always good quality.

We also use Tesco delivery as this stops both of us scavenging as we walk the aisles and keeps the bill down more than any other technique!

We now use the town Co-op, Tesco delivery, lidl, Whole Foods, CostCo plus Amazon and eBay for the weird stuff that travel has thrown into our path and we can no longer live without.

We discovered COOK recently.
All frozen, but of a quality that simply amazed us.
Prices? About on a par with Tesco Finest, but an order of magnitude better.
