I would have them all wrapped in neoprene ;-)) The judges or the spark plugs? The competitors! I took that as a given.

Indexed plugs are standard on Gen 1 Honda Insights, the spark plug hole is marked A, B or C and the plugs are similarly marked. Must brighten up the storeman's when someone comes in for a mixed set.

Have a read of Graham Bells's book...Modern Engine Tuning. He has a section on plugs. One suggestion is filing the neg electrode to a point as sparks jump to sharp corners, like a lightning conductor attracts lightning. Supposedly to give a better spark. He covers multi electrodes, precious metal (iridium etc), copper. Nothing about indexing though. He also covers spark plug temperature selection. A good book.

On my MGB, the amount of pinking was linked to the plug gap, and it would slowly get worse as the gap widened. Reducing the gap reduced the pinking. I assumed that this was because a wider gap means a slightly later spark in the cycle.
This was after setting the timing at the optimum setting, without feeling that the performance was dulled.
I don't see how sharpening the electrode will make much difference. The spark will jump to the easiest spot, although with a flat end I suppose that might move around.

The idea is to align the plug by using copper washers so that the spark area is centred Never heard of this, however i did have lady customer once who asked me to align all her wheel centre caps, she was Gobsmacked after i drove the car 100yds and then showeed her how they where out of synq......she just didnt get it.

Should have told her she needed a Roller for that to work!

This is a new idea to me but on the US Healey boys forum it seems common practice. The idea is to align the plug by using copper washers so that the spark area is centred in the cylinder and not facing the cylinder wall. Numbering the plugs once done, anyone had a go at this?
They also file the tip back to the edge of the electrode.. Did a Google and whilst I could find lots of references, I couldnt find anyone who had done a before and after dyno run.

Was involved with a race bike engine that kept blowing neat little holes in its piston crowns...turned out that the particular brand of spark plug that was being used in it projected about 1mm further into the combustion chamber than the nominally equivalent spark plugs usually used by the engine builder. Doubling up the sealing washers on the plugs was all it took to end a rather long, baffling and expensive series of engine blow ups.

Also seen a good few times where long reach plugs fitted where short reach should have been used. Some left in so long they caused problems when taking them out due to the burnt ends knackering the threads in alloy heads.
