Inspired by all the Trads with wing mounted number plates I wanted to see what a plate would look like on the wide wing of a Plus 8. This is what it looks like, positioned in place but not fixed. OK, it works and I rather like it, but a big "BUT"... Removing the number plate box reveals a rather messy area between the grill and valence, this is the close-up. To make it all look neat a new under cowl or longer radiator grill would be needed: both are possible but neither would be cheap or easy. So the original number plate is going back: at least it is now clean and polished!! I'll let someone else pick up this idea.

Could you post a picture of the car with the original number plate to see how that area beneath the grill is originally covered? The wing mounted number plate looks great. I wouldn't have thought it would be too difficult to get something fabricated and sprayed the same colour as the car to cover up that space.

Peter, thanks. I like this trad look but agree the under cowl fabrication is a challenge. Maybe Cain can work his magic...

Simply removing the number plate doesn't help, the mounting box front isn't attractive at all. So it needs a properly formed and finished trim piece to "join" the bottom of the radiator cowl to the lower trim.

- really like the wing mounted plate ( Aero Racing logo is a nice touch too ); it looks very 'purposeful' Would a suitably mounted badge bar cover most of the unsightly 'gubbins' ? Failing that, a lot more work, but you could carve a mould from styrofoam and then produce a fibre glass shell/cowl to fit in place,Suitably sprayed body colour it could look the business.... Any local firms who could tackle it if you don't fancy DIY ...? James

I took the radiator grill right off and looking at the way it is made one answer would be to get a new on fabricated about 5cm longer and with the stainless strip below.
This would hide most of the "gubbins" and eliminate the need for VERY expensive painting. But still doesn't get over the fact that the radiator cowl is too short on each side. It needs to come down to meet the bottom of the wing.
The radiator grill isn't exactly a complex part, but the curve is. So it would probably need a spare grill to be used as a donor/template
The extensions to the cowl could be added to the ends of the stainless band at the bottom of the grill.
More to think about, but a winter project I think.

The long grille on the S1 modified by Simmons is very Marmite so be careful. A mesh 'secondary' grille might look better inside a plastic box surround.

I like the alternative idea, a standard numberplate box with the front aperture cut out and a grill to match the lower one in the valence inserted might look better. Or even a set of louvres...... It doesn't need to improve cooling, the Aero Plus 8 fitting seems to run at a steady 95C, whatever the weather and load! I need to find out how much the GRP box MMC uses on the front of the Plus 8 costs... The rest is relatively easy to do. Peter

You should be able to pick a secondhand box up easily from somebody who's fitted a wing mounted plate. I'm on a train at the moment so don't have good access to find a photo of the long grille. Now I'm back...............
