Well now that I have had my Green Spitfire inspired M3W for a few months I am looking toward the months when the San Francisco Bay Area is not so warm. I was hoping to get some ideas on a classic brown leather flying helmet. I am a huge fan of buying quality and letting time tell the tale. I have already selected a barnstormer jacket and would appreciate any experience and ideas on a flyers cap that have worked well from those that have gone before me.

I can second the Sterkowski recommendation. I have the Shearling Aviator with mask and collar. I have found the cap is usable during the Oregon summer. I'm very satisfied with their product and the customer order was speedy and fit perfectly.

With great foresight I bought mine from a scout jumble sale in the 1960s and kept it as a gag dress up item. It is a genuine 20s or 30s item, and better than anything I have found on sale today!

I use a cold war Russian MIG pilot's headset - (thanks for the tip-off ElCid). These are beautifully made and available NOS (new old stock) from eBay, boxed & in different sizes. An added advantage for me is that they have integral headphones that are good at deadening the cacophony of sounds that accompany us. Unfortunately the actual sewn-in earphones are totally incompatible with modern electronics so I use a small pair of Panasonic over-ear headphones under the helmet (linked via bluetooth to my satnav). This setup is comfortable and works well. In-ear headphones would probably be even better but I don't get on with them. Yes, I do have to put up with a bit of ribbing from other M3W drivers - but I know deep down that they're just jealous! MIG Pilot Helmet on eBay

Very pleased with this one although a tad warm for summer use even in the UK. Had it for over a year now. UK source is same firm that supply Irvin sheepskin flying jackets - had mine for over 30 years - still like new. With these to match End result

Add the oxygen mask per the Ebay photo and you'll scare both small children and Dr Who fans!
