I've had a couple of "close scrapes" and felt that fitting a Wolf Sump Protector would be good insurance.

When we got the car up on a lift it became clear just how much damage there was.

This photo shows the oil filter housing. I'm told that if the hex end is scraped off all the oil comes out.... So at the next service a new filter housing will be fitted!



From the front the damage was mostly superficial, but covered a wide area. The oil drain plug had lost about 2mm from one side. Again, a new one will be fitted at the next service.



Here is the guard, fitted (with a lot of help from Tom).



I don't really understand why MMC didn't fit a guard, there are unused attachment points in the front cross member and the chassis tub behind the engine.

Roadsters have also suffered catastrophic sump damage and total oil loss.

We had a BHM sump guard fitted recently.

The Wolf sump guard covers the oil filter ?

Correct, so the guard has to be removed for an oil change.
The single hole in the guard is where the filter is fitted: the end of the filter is flush with the outer face of the guard.

I understand that Woolf did this so that whilst the filter is protected the sump guard gives as much ground clearance as possible.

Revolutions in Perth wouldn't let me take the S5 without a sump guard. Russell P describes it as a "Panzer" strength product. It's a larger area covered. It's not fitted to the engine and uses existing holes for placement. Engineered by a firm in Perth. I totally agree about there not being at the very least, a factory option, if existing holes can be used.
It takes your preoccupations away from ground clearance and onto the darn hood!

Better a small water leak than a massive oil leak!

The Wolf guard is a necessity in my view. My 8 feels lower than previous exotica that I've owned - and at a critical point too.

Why not go one step further?

Instead of fit and hope it works - then just keep scraping stuff.

Mount it with sensors (switches would do) so that you get a lamp on the dash to warn you that you have hit something, it could work on a latched reset circuit so it stays on until you deliberately reset it after checking all is good underneath.

I "grounded" my engine block while on holiday in Spain recently. I have a reduced height sump (Mulfab) so that was unscathed, but the bell housing took a bit of a whack.
