During my trip to RFTH last week I noticed a new noise coming from the backend of my M3W. It sounded like something rubbing and it happened each time the rear wheel went round. This resulted in the car sounding slightly like a steamtrain as I was going along, emiting a like of sh..sh..sh..sh..sh noise.

The noise has lessened over the last couple of days but this evening I took the boot liner out and found that a chunk of the edge of rear sprocket has sheared off. My guess is that this has somehow been the source of the noise, possibly somehow rubbing against the belt.

Should I be particularly concerned by this?

I would remove it, I don't think it's a problem. I just saw my new steel sprocket for the first time.

Remove it. It will damage the belt as it is. You probably don't need the flange. I have the SuperMax sprocket and there is no provision for a flange and I have found it unnecessary.

What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

Always good to shed weight!
I also removed the aluminium sheets attached to the lower seat back, going up underneath the upper seat back.
Made no difference, except making life easier and car lighter smile

Anyone tried to remove the circlips on the bonnet dzus fasteners so that they can be kept in ones pocket while removal/installation of the bonnet?

What else can be binned? Another wheel perhaps?!

Mind did that. Remove the full aluminium lip and the belt will happily overhang the edge of the rear sprocket.
It's not a problem

If you do decide you want to replace the aluminium ring, I have a spare one that I could send you for the price of the postage. It became 'spare' when I was supermaxed. PM me if interested.

They come off with a pair of pliers but are almost impossible to get back on

I replaced mine with circlips which are just loose on the shaft of the duez clip. I can check the size when I'm back from Grindelwald

The Garage 56 spring kit works well and eases removal and refitting

Thanks for the information. I'm going to take the flange off to avoid damage to the belt and hopefully this will also cure the noise.
I won't bother replacing it for now. At least, not unless the belt starts working its way off the sprocket.

Also +1 for the Garage 56 bonnet spring kit
