JLR's announcement that by 2020 all the cars they sell will either be electric or hybrid seems like an incredibly ambitious timetable, considering that they don't make any at the moment.

Aston Martin too. I guess it's a sign that increasingly power trains won't be unique to individual manufacturers, but will be developed an supplied through consortia and available to other manufacturers to buy.

Another example of Morgan leading the way - they've never attempted to build their own engines, and have always relied on buying them in from outside suppliers smile

JLR are about to launch the I-Pace so they do have a suitable power train.
I suspect it won't be long before all the other manufacturers announce their plans either.

If the dimensions of the i-pace are as compact as it looks in the photos, it could well interest me, as I'll be looking to replace my A class by the end of 2018.

I'm keeping an eye on it with interest Giles. Planning on hanging on to my Disco Sport until around 2020 so will looking very seriously at a hybrid or if a decent range, fully electric LR.

I just read it as a clever way of saying "we will light hybrid" most of our models along with switching to the 4cyl engines and have a couple of e-only models.

Still a good amount of work to be done but given the rationalisation in the drivetrains JLR have performed they should be well placed to achieve this.

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

How long will it be before the politicians and the green brigade realise that there is not enough lithium on the face of the earth to provide batteries for all the electric vehicles, there are not enough power stations, and the total environmental impact of electic vehicles is worse than IC diesels?

I read this as new models from JLR will be electric or hybrid from 2020. The article states that current petrol and diesel models will still be produced after that date. Great forum material though all this EV stuff.

I don't think EVs are being developed for the "green brigade". They are a conscious attempt to reduce spiralling healthcare costs in cities due to vehicle pollution and at the same time reduce dependence on a single type of fuel. Both pretty sensible aims (to me).
