How long will it be before the politicians and the green brigade realise that there is not enough lithium on the face of the earth to provide batteries for all the electric vehicles, there are not enough power stations, and the total environmental impact of electic vehicles is worse than IC diesels? Yes ! Pity as its all so terribly exciting isn't it. Tax rates on electric cars are already going back to petrol/diesel rates ....

How long will it be before the politicians and the green brigade realise that there is not enough lithium on the face of the earth to provide batteries for all the electric vehicles, there are not enough power stations, and the total environmental impact of electic vehicles is worse than IC diesels? err, because there is, there will be, and it isn't? All the so-called analyses of environmental impact that I've seen compare the total lifetime cost of EVS and battery industries with just the impact of IC vehicles, conveniently ignoring the catastrophic impact of the oil exploration extraction, and refinement industry. You can't moan that lithium mining damages the environment whilst ignoring the damage being done by the oil industry in places like Azerbijan or Nigeria or practically anywhere else that oil is extracted. But I think FoxT's quite right, the current swing from diesels to EVs is primarily driven by a need to improve the appalling air quality in our cities, and it seems entirely sensible to me also.

Because other solutions like providing decent public transport are just too difficult? Along with air transport, sea transport, over-population, environmental impact of consumerism, free movement of people, and a thousand other inconvenient truths. The overall effect of EV's will be minimal, it may even be negative in the short term as we prematurely scrap thousands of cars, but because it's become so politicised we'll rush into it just as we did with the previous saviour - diesels ! I must have missed the outcry from the environmentalists, and the armchair forum experts, when diesel cars were pushed to the fore. Being a well-informed bunch I assume none of us were taken in and we all drive petrol vehicles. I know I do.

I'm sitting in Leeds railway station enjoying a coffee.
When Leeds council were planning a tram system they lost the plot and cancelled it. Sheffield got there earlier and although it cost £65 million, it transformed public transport. A similar thing happened in Manchester.
The NCP want £18 per day to park over six hours in Leeds but the car parks are still full.

The JLR release has caused a lot of confusion in the media:
Headline A: JLR will only produce electric cars
Headline B: JLR will only produce hybrid or electric cars
Headline C: All new model introductions will be electric or hybrid only
The reality: all new model introductions will include a hybrid or electric option somewhere in the range. Petrol and diesel only models will still be available.This is hardly a big deal at all.
