If the casting is a poor fit between the chassis cross-members it would be subject to tensile stress which it's not designed to take.
Looking at the way the crack has opened up that would be my guess. My thoughts exactly.

If that's the case, then a shim aluminium spacer each side should relieve the stress. Simon knows about welding aluminium, and it may be possible (and quicker) to weld it and grind off the excess.

Looks as though a decent welder could fill that crack with weld and then it would be a perfect fit and be at least as strong as before.

Ooh er….. interesting component design. Looks like it might be a gravity die casting. That change in section looks optimistic. Will create cooling issues, porosity and weakness at the change in volume during manufacture. Perhaps it all should have been a uniform thickness with webs and the fixing could have been a localised boss. Hindsight’s a wonderful thing!

No impact damage at all and its a manual Hmm..so it may be a manual box only brace. This is a rather poor photo of the Autobox sump and behind it the brace that sits at the back of the box.  It seems that the Autobox brace is a different part, with a "D" section to clear the tail of the box. But given the nature of the crack on your car and the similarity of the brace fitting I feel the need to take a closer look!

My wife is on her third Suzuki Jimny. Not particularly used in a real off road environment more to cover the snow we get in this specific part of Aberdeenshire.
At around 75,000 miles both of the earlier cars have broken their thick aluminium gearbox bracket and we are not alone on that issue according to the local garage.
Therefore not only a Morgan issue.
