Hi, does anyone know if you can successfully cut a solid walnut dash with a hole saw, I'm fitting a mig clock just to the right of instruments in 1996 4/4.

Yes, just put masking tape over the area you're cutting.

And please let us know how you get on because I for one have chickened out from cutting my painted dash -so far.

I have a Mig clock but yet to fit it. I have tried testing cuts in both wood and metal to assess mounting it as the tolerance between the clock body and the visible "bezel" front is pretty close. You will need to be accurate with your hole cutting. Mine is not a perfect circle and has bulges on the sides so I made a template to mark out the wood/metal test panels. I used a holesaw to start cutting the orifice close to the lines with smaller drills to start the bulged areas, and finished it off with a sanding attachment in a drill.
Mine will likely be set into a panel below the dash or on the transmission tunnel as there is no suitable spot in the dash, similar to the Plus4 Supersport stopwatch mounting.
Having put the job off for 2 years(!) it could well be done over the winter in amongst other jobs. House move permitting.

Been there and done that... one tip I was given was to run the hole saw backwards for the first cut to score the dash without the teeth digging in. Worked for me.

I asked my Morgan mechanic if he would do it; he refused.
So it's down to me, if I can ever buck up the courage.

Mig clock: which one is that? Some of them look huge.

I fitted one to my Roadster painted dash three years ago. Cutting that first hole is daunting! I practiced on some mdf first and used a Dremel to drill all around before carefully cutting out with one of my wood carving chisels. Finished off VERY slowly and carefully with a mini drum sander on the Dremel. There really isn't any room for error with such a narrow bezel lip! Good luck!

Jays is right in that the bezel is narrow, The other area to watch out for is cutting the hole too near the top of the dash as the ash frame runs behind it and you wouldn't want to cut into that.

I chose not to on my last Morgan as it was too tight so I made up a centre console in engine turned stainless and fitted the mig clock in that. Have a pic somewhere..
