Not been the greatest of days.
The Aero needed a pair of new tyres. I decided to bite the bullet and go for a new set all round as they were all pretty old. In changing the tyres, Alan Claridge noticed a crack in the inner side rim of one of the rear wheels.
So now a bill coming up for a new wheel or wheels. However in talking to Williams this afternoon as to whether they could get a new wheel from the factory, they asked if I had looked into getting the wheel repaired. Furthermore they thought the factory now might offer a part exchange service for repaired wheels. I had no idea you could weld repair mag alloy. Does anyone have any experience good or bad of having this done? Apparently the crack in my wheel is a single crack extending about half way down the rim.
So new wheel or wheels if I can get them, or Factory part exchange if they do it, or specialist weld repair?
My Aero is a 2002 S1 with the original Magnesio wheels
Your thoughts would be very much appreciated

they weld ally. Can you weld magnesium or do you end up with a burning flare?

Its depressing but if it were my car it would be all new wheels. If one has cracked the others may do so leading to an accident.

What a good job you found it before a failure occurred.

You can MIG weld it, but definitely not a DIY job. Need someone who knows what he is doing or it can burn.

Nice to know they can be welded, magnesium is a bit like an Aero chocolate bar, full of holes..

It can be welded, usually with an AC TIG set though braver folk than me have done it it the past with a gas torch and a large dustbin full of dry sand (for when the job catches fire)
