If I can I avoid Helpers. I can't control them. Me too. G Clamps are much more reliable.  was however forced to hold a spanner for the inside rear seat mounting bolts as my arms are 1 foot too short. AAAAAH! Open the door.

I also use vice grips to hold the head or nut when I can't reach far enough.

AAAAAH! Open the door. Door open - arms still too short. Vice grips can be more infuriating than in such circumstances - especially as mine are getting “tired”.

Dave my axle appears to have moved forward on the drivers side by about 1cm compared to the other side. Is this physically possible and if so how do I move it back ? If you got this idea from looking at the position of the wheel in the wheel arch it is more likely that the position of the rear mudguard is different from left to right. If your car had a rear axle 1 cm out of line it would be crabbing sideways down the road  With the steering straight ahead try measuring the distance both sides between the front and rear wheel nuts.

I replaced my rear springs at the weekend two tools that made it easier/single handed were:  A lever made from a bit of channel, angle and a couple of pads to give it some angle to push down. The angle is bolted on allowing it to be used both sides. Also a pin with the first 50mm tapered this makes aligning all the washers and spacers at either end of the spring a doddle, once all lined up use the fixing bolt to push the pin through and all the washers and spacers will be in situ.

Hi Dave, can you tell me what width Denso tape you used and how many rolls did you need to do both springs. It comes in 75mm and 50mm wide 10m long rolls but I need to get it from the UK on EBay as I can’t find it over here and I only want to place one order.

Hi John One roll did both with some spare....... It must have been 75mm. 50mm sound too narrow.
