As of today, we own a 2004 Runabout. I hear from the previous owner that it is kitted out with a K&N typhoon ram air, filter and air box and the engine is a "K-tec". I looked online and it seems that K-tec make alot of tuning elements for various engines. Can anyone tell me what this kit has changed in the original design...? What happens when a Morgan plus 4 runabout is "K-tec'd?" thx

cole Hi Cole and welcome to TM. If your car is a 2004 Runabout, then the engine should be the Ford Zetec R (commonly called the 'blacktop' because the cam boxes will be black plastic ) On a technical note, it will have solid ie mechanical , lifters not the hydraulic lifters of the earlier Zetec and Zetec E engines ( called the 'silvertops' because they had alloy cam covers). Also, in a Morgan, the exhaust will exit by crossing under the body after the catalyst and then coming out at the rear of the car- the earlier Zetecs just have a straight pipe which runs front to back It should be easy to tell which engine you have: Looking from the driver's seat, the Zetec can be identified by having a silver cam cover with 'DOHC16v' on the bottom left, the Zetec-E has 'ZETEC16v' on the bottom left, and the Zetec-R has a black plastic cam cover If you want a good explanation of the Zetec engine, don't bother with sources such as Wikipedia- look at: http://www.burtonpower.com/technical_1/zetec_e.aspx Nigel Puttick, who posts on TM has a Runabout so I am sure he can give you much more detailed information than I can regards, G PS If it is a 2004 Runbaout, then unless something has been changed it will be a 4/4 not a Plus 4

cole Cole, welcome and congrats on the new car. GLLHG's answer is very thorough and my addition would be that calling the car "K-tec'd" was the previous owners way of saying it had been fettled. This could amount to a remap and engine management chip or simply the parts you already mention [induction, etc]

If the mods have been limited to the K &N, then the important thing is to check that it( the K &N) is positioned so that the air it is taking in is cool and dense. regards, G PS Cereal or Jim M are much more clued up on this than I, so they may have 'further and better particulars'

Thanks all.
Black alu(?)says: Ford 16V Zetec on top. Car came with a series of photos on a CD incl. the "umbau" on the exhaust system from the bloc to the tailpipe. The K&N Typhoon was added by the same garage a little later and as far as I can see that was the extent of it. Thanks again for all your friendly input. Last question...I popped open the plywood cover behind the seats. I see a jack, a crank a hammer. Other cavities in the foam plastic are empty. Were these originally for tools, first aid kit and perhaps spare oil? Previous owner never went there...thx

Cole, one thing which you might want to think about: If you have wire wheels ( and I assume you have) what type of spinners or locking nuts do you have. If you have 'eared' spinners, then clearly, you knock these off and on/ tighten with a hammer( soft faced, copper/hide or similar) If- as might be more likely, you have what are called 'continental pattern' which are a large octagonal nut but without spinners, then you are going to need some kind of large spanner( for use with or without the hammer) to loosen and tighten them You might want to check that the car came with one of these. If you haven't got one, then take a look at the one which MWS wheels do: http://www.mwsint.com/Shop/Details.asp?Id=KAS42#

GLLHG,
Yes, wire wheels; no spinners. These are chromed "nuts" 70mm w/ "Left Side," and "Right Side" and the direction to loosen indicated w/ an arrow stamped on them. The 42mm spanner on the mws site is too small. (unless this is a cosmetic 'cap' covering the real nut @ 42mm...?) I think the hammer comes std with the car although it seems misplaced as I have no knock-offs. And it is massive...more for giving serious beatings to a frozen brake drum. Still curious about the empty cutouts in the styrofoam under the spare....2 empty recessions...one about 25 cm . x 30 cm with a relief cross in the bottom and another behind it about 20 x 30 cm. Thx.
