As I often take long trips I am sensitive to wheel bearing failure. My Mentor has often told Me, if a long trip is planned, grease the front wheel bearings. It is good insurance if nothing else. Greasing includes cleaning them first, inspecting and then good clean grease. I used to use a fixture to insure the grease got into the bearing. Now I just use My fingers and need the grease into the bearing.

Job done. The bearings were as in the link to gomog earlier posted. I bought from Wych bearings as per Arwyn’s recommendation. Straight forward replacement process with no hitches. The failure was in the outer bearing where some damage/erosion was visible on the outer race. Couldn’t see any reason for it as everything looked good. Ah well, one of those things.

Good news Phil! Wheel bearings rarely fail but when they do, they let you know by the noise.

True. I noticed mine on pre MOT check. Raised the car front to check everything and noticed the faint noise on spinning the wheel. No play felt. I must have caught it very early. Car passed MOT today. Advisory for one tyre nearing the limit. All 4 are due replacement anyway so no worry there. I am tempted to have the alloys refurbished at the same time as the coating is detariorating on the inner surfaces. Now....what colour? Currently silver. Tempted with black.

Sospan, I was waiting in anticipation for the part numbers of the bearings and especially the oil seal. Regards,
