Not a surprise at all, to me.

I'm surprised it isn't higher.

In Germany car tax and third party insurance had, when I lived there in the 90s, to be paid by direct debit. This was set up when you got the licence plate.
If the direct debit bounced the Police came round.....
So no untaxed or uninsured cars on the road.

Well that’s just a complete failure and yes, the law abiding and conscientious will be paying for that

Well, the old way wasn't free.

Every hour, 7 days a week, an HGV full of paperwork turned up at a dedicated paper handling centre. And that paper was then processed, for around 30 million vehicles a year.
I can well believe it might have cost a couple of million a week to run. Or more.

So maybe the digital service is not costing taxpayers more.

I doubt that there's any correlation between compliance rates and vehicle duty.

I'd be more concerned at the likely increase in uninsured vehicles. If it's not taxed I'm betting there's a good chance it's also not insured. And that will cost us in premiums from profit making insurance companies.

So it would be a good thing if the clever chaps at DVLA who digitised the service for complaint folk could also figure out how to digitise detecting non-compliance.

Will

Ah, the numbers are here if anyone would care to work it out. (I'm a) on a phone & b) leaving on a jet plane laugh2

It's OK. Hammond wants to reduce the VAT registration limit to £20,000. That will make up the difference.

I really should keep more up-to-date with current affairs. I have genuinely only just realised that you're not referring to Richard Hammond.

Maybe we should all agree to refer to the chancellor as Spreadsheet Phil to avoid further confusion.

As has been said in a lot of cases those who do not pay VED also have no insurance and no MOT as you cannot get road tax after a private purchase without an MOT and insurance.

I see no great problem for someone who is say 5 days late with their VED payment.

For those who are over a certain time without VED, insurance or MOT's is there not a case for some blanket use of tow trucks in the locations on a semi regular basis for those vehicles.

Not only would the country get more tax money but get non MOT'd cars off the road!
