My 19 year old son, in his first year doing a history degree in Auckland, has been selected for an study exchange program. His choice was to go to Exeter and he is there from early January 18 to late January 19. His mum is having kittens :-) He is all enrolled and we have sorted his accomodation.

Anyone from Exeter with any advice as to what to look out for and what to avoid? His brain is a sponge when it comes to history, totally obsessed. He spends his spare time collecting medieval armour and weapons and belongs to several groups that get together and bash each other with swords.

Much as we would like to visit him, we are building a new house next year and he has to concentrate on his studies. I'm sure he will return once he has finished his degree and we will have opportunity in the future.

Congratulations, you must rightly be very proud.

If nobody can offer insights I will contact an old school friend who studied physics there.

Hi Philip

I am from Exeter although i now live just up the road in Taunton.
First let me say that Exeter is a small but very modern city with great amenities for young people. Its close to the coast and is easy to get to by road/rail/air.
Because its a university city, it has lots of student accommodation although i dont know what this costs. If your looking for private accommodation with a family send me a PM.
So Exeter is a great city and your son will definitely enjoy his time there.

We visited Exeter the last time we went to Thrill on the Hill. It really is a lovely small city. We found it quite vibrant and friendly with lots of activities and things happening. Really suited to a young person who loves history.

He will enjoy it enourmously. I envy the kids that have these opportunities today that were unthinkable when most of us were their age.

Other than saying that we enjoyed our visit I can't offer much help.

It’s a lovely city......I was lucky enough to have my own personal guide....who I’m sure will be posting once he’s got out of bed!

If I hadn’t been lured up to Cumbria....I’d thought I might have moved down there.

He won't have any trouble finding "Historical Reenactment Groups" here. I'd wouldn't suggest bringing his sword with him though.

Exeter is a good University , and has a sound reputation both academically and socially, (but perhaps not for the sciences where they are struggling to get numbers, in common with other places, too much like hard work for modern youth?) In the past it had a higher ration of females to males than others but this might have changed.

Not sure how many battle sites he can visit in the area, but being young and possessing intellectual curiosity, I am sure he will find something to interest him.
