Hi all, has anyone experienced engine fumes and a somewhat ammonia like smell coming from their car under hard acceleration? Mine has always let out exhaust like fumes but since being returned from a service at RTCC it now adds the smell of ammonia as well.
Car goes like stink, nothing else wrong, but would be useful to know if anyone out there has any ideas.
Many thanks in advance for any advice.
Jappo
Probably should have mentioned - car is a 2003 S1, just been remapped by RTCC

Jappo if it has only started since being returned from a Morgan dealer I'd make a call to them.

Just the newness wearing off. How do you mean? It's a 2003 S1 with 26K miles on it.

"Car goes like stink, nothing else wrong, but would be useful to know if anyone out there has any ideas." "Stink" being the operative word. Cats in the exhaust?

An ammonia smell and nothing has been changed? I remember reading an article on this awhile back but couldn't find it; I did, however, find this one that also discusses the ammonia smell from car exhausts . It also seems certain SUVs (often V8s) experience the same thing in the USA. As I've never heard about this before, I wonder if the remap has changed the gas out put from the engine and therefore is forcing your catalytic converter to create the smell while processing the exhaust?

Hello Jappo
When I tested my 2002 S1 Aero 8 before buying (with 27000km on the clock) I noticed this ammonia smell and was advised by the buyer that it was the cats. All else being good on the vehicle I went ahead and bought it.
2&1/2 years and 20000km later I often get the smell under hard acceleration but have just become used to it. Believe my car is pretty standard other than Librands sports exhaust. Be interested though to see what other remarks this thread produces.
Cheers

Jappo,
Your someway from RTCC would it be worth finding a friendly MOT station and ask them to check the gas emission to make sure its nothing serious.
I always thought the smell associated with over worked CATS was more rotten eggs than ammonia!

Me too, rotten eggs I would expect from mcats but not ammonia. Maybe after the remap I'm just burning the clutch out without realising.
Regardless, pretty nasty angine/exhaust fumes have always been a charactersitic offull beans acceleration in this particular car - even before the recent mods - so maybe there are some seals around the engine bay/bonnet that have perished?
On a different note- anyone decatted their S1 or fitted a bypass?

I think we're onto something - maybe it is cats after all - I want to get rid of my cats alltogether, cars like this were never meant to have them and they are a waste of the planet's resources anyway.
