I used aluminium rivenuts with stainless countersunk screws (so no nuts underneath).
Single sided SA neoprene applied to the strips to prevent water getting between the strips and the running board. Easy to remove when required. What about corrosion between the alloy rivnuts and the stainless screws?

Single sided SA neoprene applied to the strips to prevent water getting between the strips and the running board. Easy to remove when required. A good solution! To pick up on Jay's very valid point, given there is next to no load on the screws then I think I'd use PEEK rather than stainless. PEEK cannot react with anything metallic. It is good to 180C which is far hotter than the outside of the silencer.

After more than 10 years, I jump into the +8 Bitsa and notice I have never installed the running board strips. I always say to myself, I must do this one day. Now I have directions on "How To Do It".

Fair point but the rivnuts should last many years and are easy to drill out and replace if they do corrode, could not source alloy screws at the time and not sure if the threads would have been man enough (can you use that term these days?).

When I rebuilt my 4/4 with new wings from the factory, I never drilled or fitted these running boards.
I much prefer the clean line of the wing and it obviously prevents these corrosion issues.

One of the advantages in leaving near the Chesapeake Bay is the availability of marine hardware of all sorts and types. I probably spend more time buying marine type supplies for my 4/4 than I do for my sailboat. I replaced the running board treads using stainless bolts with nylock nuts which should last for the life of the car. Marine hardware of good quality is essential rather than hardware store quality which is inferior.
PS The War of 1812 was effectively ended on the Chesapeake Bay at Baltimore's Fort McHenry with the defeat of the British fleet, September 13&14, 1814.

I was involved in a job for Metro Machine Corp and moving a newbbuild drydock from Europe to there. I have been involved in a number of discharges but this was one of the scenic. I remember a wonderful evening in Colonial Williamsburg.
