Carbon release bearings, thought they went out with the arc? ;-) They did, my three wheeler was built in 1930! Although the carbon release bearings staggered on till the 70s! Google suggests the Hillman Imp, the Reliant Robin, the MGB and pre 73 Vdubs all have them. You can still get good mileage from carbons but sitting with one's foot on the clutch as so many modern drivers do, is bad news for them. And fitting a new one is a giggle as with carbons meant for something else and loose, mine is held in with epoxy glue!

Original post re posted. Hope it helps. Is anybody in the magic circle? I need a magician. Parcel in the post this morning from Mr Rutter with my new £3.50 replacement clutch return spring. So this afternoon I eagerly dived down into the foot well and stripped the pedal assembly out. As I was removing it I spotted it - OMG! Today's conundrum. Take a look at the second photo. Does anybody know how the spring is supposed to be replaced? Has anybody changed one? Even if it could conceivably be unwound to enlarge the i/d it would surely over stress the tangs. Its very stiff. Broken spring  New spring to be assembled???  I wound a new spring on in the end. However it is very difficult to work out how and which end to start winding. To make matters worse if you start in the wrong place/end you cannot back pedal and unwind without knackering the spring. Tip... Make a copy of the spring first out of an old coat hanger or bit of soft wire and have a practice.

I have now done this twice!! 4 years apart - only solution is to wind on the spring - CAREFULLY!! Thankfully I managed it both times - last occasion of the break was exiting the Three Counties Showgrounds at Run for the Hills! I had to wait till I got home to get the spare spring to effect the repair but the car worked flawlessly until then which makes me think that the spring is to protect the clutch from the left foot pressing the pedal unconsciously rather than a necessary return spring for the clutch operation.
Anyhow all is well again!!

I was informed by a dealer in my early Morgan days that the clutch pedal can be used as a footrest.

The clutch return spring on my last morgan broke after a couple of days of me buying it
Bought a new spring but never fitted it as the pedal was returning fine

The spring was broken on mine when I bought it.
The dealer didn't notice it when he gave it a pre-sale service and check up and I didn't notice it until after the warranty period had run out and then only by accident when I was crawling about in the foot well.
I was always taught not to ride the clutch pedal anyway so I won't replace it at least until I have to get the pedal box out for something else.
I guess the additional spring would make the clutch pedal heavier as well.

My clutch pedal spring on my Roadster from 2010 broke today but everything works as usual. From what I could see in the foot well I have different pedals than the ones on the pictures. To me it looks much easier to replace the spring and I see no need to wind them on. Is it because of the built year? However, I will wait until I have the feeling that the clutch pedal is not moving back as it should do. Hope that this will not cause any „collateral“ damages...

I think the idea behind the clutch pedal spring is so that you can rest your foot on the clutch pedal without actuating the clutch.

I think the idea behind the clutch pedal spring is so that you can rest your foot on the clutch pedal without actuating the clutch. Ok, than it seems not urgently necessary to replace the spring; good news!
