I use the bank all the time as i believe face to face contact is important rather than a call centre with staff who have little or no banking knowledge Totally agree. I find my dealings with my UK bank (Lloyds) frustrating, as it seems quite hard to actually speak to a grown-up. By contrast, I'm very happy with my French bank (LCL). Their local small business unit is excellent and very helpful, and when I want to talk to my bank manager, it's very easy to get in and see her.

if you use internet banking then the costs should be shared by the internet bankers only.
rant over Since the costs of running a bricks and mortar bank are much greater than running an internet bank, I'd be quite happy with that. I'm not sure all the fans of Face to Face banking would be happy to shoulder their share of the costs, though. There is definitely a problem at the moment for some older people who aren't computer literate, but it's not going to last long. Anybody who is currently under the age of 70 can reasonably be expected to be at least a bit tech savvy. After all, cash machines have been around for half a century, Home computers have been widely available for nearly 40 years and the World Wide Web for over 25. And even if one isn't very knowledgable, one can always learn. Life-long learning and the acquisition of new skills is one of the best defences we have against developing dementia in later life, so it really is good for you, too!

I still use my local bank on a regular basis and a very friendly place it is!
With internet banking and the supposed "cashless society"; the concept is fine.
However, many people are concerned about security and also in rural areas with low speed broadband and poor, or non-existent mobile phone signals, the systems are not reliable.
As a regular visitor to Dartmouth (Susie's son and family live there), I agree with Rich on the changing nature of the town.
Sad to see locals being priced out and a decreasing choice in the shops. Also, sad to see no bank and no longer a cottage hospital.

Well I visited the Lloyds horsebox parked up in the central car park yesterday to pay in a cheque and as their uplink was out of service they had to revert to a paper transaction. This is not the first time either, so it means they have to input the work once more when they return to a branch or coverage on the uplink who knows. It doesn't seem very modern or efficient to me. Did I mention there are three people running this horsebox  .. That is exactly the same number that used to be in the branch on a good day  .

In the USA to pay in a cheque you simply go to your bank's on line banking portal, photograph or scan an image of the cheque and send the image with the credit details. You have to keep the paper cheque for some months in case the bank requests you mail it in, but usually the payment clears within 12 hours.
Why can't we do something similar here?

That sounds like a good system if you have a branch..
This is how the banks work between each other after all and is the reason that cheques are cleared faster these days.

Why can't we do something similar here? Why bother to write something out, then scan it then use the internet to send it to your bank when you can use the internet directly plus BACS? Anywa, be that as it may, the banks bar RBS are commercial businesses and its up to them what service they offer customers. Particularly when UK retail banking is free.
