Standard girlings are fine for standard usage. I rebuilt mine with all parts from a uk company I believe the actual calipers are now only available as NOS if you can find them. good luck after the rebuild I did repaint the calipers red. All the parts you need are here http://www.powertrackbrakes.co.uk/

My plan was in fact to paint a pair of the original calliper red. I thought it would be easier to paint a pair on the desk in my garage, and then change them in a quick procedure. If you are fast, you don't loose much af the fluid and only need a little bleeding afterwards. I don't like the thought of clamping the hose, it might damage the hose?
Regards.

If you're careful you can bleed most of the air from the union between the caliper and hose before tightening up.

As long as you use a quality purpose made hose clamp, there is a negligible risk of damage to the hoses. Locking pliers with their serrated teeth tend to damage the hoses.
I've never been been a fan of bleeding through the union, with the manufacturers providing a bleed nipple on the caliper, it smacks of a bodge to me. Just my opinion though.
I wouldn't worry about trying to prevent fluid loss and treat it as an opportunity to change the brake fluid.
Regarding painting calipers, each to their own but make sure the bleed nipple is freed off and perhaps given a dap of copper grease before painting. I say this because I had a nicely painted pair of calipers brought to me with a sheared off bleed nipple in each. Managed to get the remains of each nipple out without damaging the paint!

Agreed Arwyn.
What is the problem with some fluid loss, every time I change a caliper on either one of my cars or on a friends car, I always bleed that caliper and the other side caliper until I get new clean fluid out both sides.
I usually do the other axle as well. Does £10 or so in brake fluid and 40 minutes of the original posters time matter that much when you are getting rid of fluid that will have get some amount of water ingress in it.
That makes no ences to me

Used one for years, still have one in the workshop then I won an Mityvac vacuum bleeder in a draw. Nice bit of kit for bleeding hydraulic systems.
