Hi all,

I just got an email that is very odd. I'll paste here its text:

Quote:

Dear mario,
Thank you for ordering from the Royal Australian Mint. Your
order has been confirmed and the details are included as an
attachment to this email. We will notify you when the order
has been dispatched.

If you have any queries regarding your order please contact
the customer services team by either sending an email
through to salesinfo@ramint.gov.au or on 1300 937782
from Monday to Friday between 8.30am - 5.00pm AEST.

To stay up to date on Mint special promotions, connect with
us through Facebook and Twitter.

Thank you for shopping with the Royal Australian Mint.

Kind Regards,

Royal Australian Mint

Now I haven't ordered anything online and surely not from the "Royal Australian Mint".

The attached file to the email has a "word" file icon, and its name ends with a .doc extension. I didn't open it, of course.

This is really well done and the fact that "they" know my name is "mario" really upsets me. And I wonder where this knowledge might come from.

The email address that sent this is labeled as Royal Australian Mint, but the address itself is [sale@newvisiontransport.net]

I just thought I should warn everyone. And if any of you has a similar experience please, do tell.

No problem Richard. A bit more digging I just did got me here:

https://www.ramint.gov.au/news-media/news/phishing-emails

Apparently this is a known phishing scam. Still, how do they know my name? my email doesn't have it in full (only the initials: mcp)

So, from the real Royal Australian Mint, there you have it, don't open the attached file.

Cheers all cheers

The recent breach I posted about has name, email, logins and in some cases passwords for a vast number of people so the ability to personalise the emails to you is quite simple.

You can look to see what sites have released your data into the wild by using the pwned site. https://haveibeenpwned.com/

If you register your email with this site then further breaches should result in an email to advise you if you are effected.

Don't think a word/excel/powerpoint is a safe attachment as these can execute applications which can download other things. Your anti-virus package should catch these. If you are using a Mac it is even less likely to cause a glitch, bit not impossible. As always close the email. Search for the text using google to see if it is a known scam. Update your virus software and run a scan.

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.
