Hi, A friend is selling their car, they want to transfer the private plate onto a rentention certificate which I understand you can now do Online instantly. However what happens with the V5, as this will have the old number on it? Do you have to wait for the new V5 before you sell? Ideally you want to do it at point of sale, as saved changing insurance, parking permit etc.. Thanks Will

When I bought the Roadster it had a private plate. This was 6 years ago. The private number stayed on the car till I got the V5 in my name with the new number. The sting in the tail for the car buyer is that then you have to change your insurance & they charged me for the admin. Plus of course you need new plates.

As you understand, the change is now instant. Did it for father in law on friday.
However, you would probably still need to wait for the new V5 before selling as the old V5 reference is no longer recognised by the system and the new buyer may not be able to tax the car.
As father in law wanted to SORN the car before the end of December, we had to telephone DVLA on Saturday morning and we were able to do it over the phone.
Maybe a new buyer could tax the car over the phone without a V5 but we didn't need to check that.
I was told by DVLA that the new V5 was posted out on the same day as the transfer so we expect the new one to arrive anytime.

Better doing it before you sell on
My new V5 took about 5 days to come through

I had this with the ML. It had a private plate on it and the dealer was clueless. That should have been a warning to me.
I believe you need to change the plate off it and get the V5 first. You can do this online but you will need to wait for the V5 in the post.
Once you have the V5 with the normal numberplate on it you can then use the ID number on the V5 to do the change of ownership on the interweb or post off the little slip.

Speaking through experience the DVLA have really sharpened their act as regards to personal number plates. Easily done on line and paperwork returned in days.

I don't think you can combine so you do need to do the address change first (so it gets to you in the post) then the reg, then the sale.

I have just put a number on retention.you have to retain number first or it will go to new owner. DVLA issue the old number online straight away. You download a document which you take to number plate supplier with old V5 .you only have 7 days from issue to transfer. Then the new buyer can change address. Make sure you fill your part of V5 in and post it off. Alot of garages say they will do,it so another keeper doesn't appear but id any speeding or parking tickets are clocked up you will get them arriving at your door ! I know someone who moved after part ex car 12 months later baliff turned up for unpaid fines the new keeper never changed address. Also taxing at the right date or you can be charge for the full month as tax is not transferable now.

Don't forget that if your driving licence or V5's have a wrong address on you are liable for a fine and some points.
