It has been below freezing in the Baltimore area for several days. My 79' 1600 stays outside in a bag and I am unclear as to the pluses and minuses of starting and running the motor in this weather. It normally starts very easily, but I am concerned about damage from starting vs. damage from letting the car sit until warmer weather. Your thoughts? Thanks,

Only starting it will be more detrimental and very likely lead to condensation in the crankcase. Be certain battery remains well-charged throughout the storage period.

Some advice here based upon N American winters. http://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/morganstorage.htmI would say unless you start it & run till warm it is not good for the engine.

Make sure your antifreeze is up to spec or risk a cracked block, split radiator or ruined heater core!

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and the article. I wish I could store inside, but the garage is filled with woodworking tools. I think I will wait until we get back to a more normal 30+ degrees F. to start the engine. Thanks,

My feeling is do not start it in sub zero weather without a block heater. Keep battery on a Tender.
