  I'm not sure whether I'm highlighting two separate issues that I would appreciate some advice and guidance on or they are one and the same thing. Let me explain ; I decided today to give my car ( a Plus 4 GDI model) having been laid up for month in a dehumidified garage, a good blast to blow the cobwebs off. On exiting the garage there was a small pool of red stained water on the garage floor ( the colour of the coolant in the overflow tank) set well back from the radiator dead central and at the very rear of the engine. I returned from a good drive and took the attached 2 photos which i hope have appeared ok which show a reddish/ rust coloured stain coming from a plug again at the very rear of the engine. Any thoughts please. John Plus 4 GDI

Healthy coolant is generally green in color. When it turns red, that indicates intrusion by combustion gases. Blown head gasket or potentially a cracked head or block. Testing for combustion products in the coolant is pretty simple.

Wrong place for coolant loss I think.
Looks to me like rust from the gearbox sump plug (if indeed that is what it is). Clean up with wire wool and keep an eye.

There appears to be a clear plastic drain tube at the top of the gearbox casing, Water may be running down the alloy? casing and rusting the ferrous drain plug.

That is the drain from the heater plenum. Rain water drains out that way. Or of course water that gets in there when you wash the car.

The gearbox level plug is sealed from the factory with what appears to be red hermatite but is probably the grandson of red hermatite.
The coolant will be red OAT antifreeze, and I suspect that what you have here is the classic situation where the cold temperatures are causing a loosening of the hoses.
Give each of the Jubilee clip a quarter turn, and check the nylon T piece on the nearside bulkhead.

Many thanks to everybody for your replies it is most appreciated. Dave W's explanation fits the bill as on more close examination the rusty colour stain on the gearbox casing does look more like hermatite and not red antifreeze . I will endeavour to tighten the hoses accordingly.
