OK, a long shot. I don't recall this ever coming up in conversation on TM.

But MissW has an urge to walk around muddy fields with a long stick.

Does anybody have any experience or any recommendations for a detector which will do the job at reasonable cost?

Just wondering.......................

I recommend watching the gentle comedy "the detectorists" which might get it out of her system without having to get muddy smile

There's a series 3 too. Actually that's the best.

Had one for years its a hobby a distant cousin has had several joined a club years ago and is always hunting got loads of old coins .
You do not have to pay a fortune its the luck of the draw . Why does she not meet some of them to see if she likes it first and they always know someone who is selling one then give it a try and see . Always remember to remove the batteries after use.

We went with Dad on Holy Island many years ago , in the sand dunes after a while it beeped like hell . I had visions of lost treasure from the monks , dad and I digging like hell . We hit it our hands in and just what a car nut wants a early Ford Pop head light. June could not stand up for laughing .
But watch out for the jokers on a beach in Yorkshire Dad was telling my nephew how the Vikings plundered and pillaged the churches and took it home . Dad had dug a hole the dropped a few pennies in and filled it over. "Here you are lad have a go". It was not long before he shouted "Grandad I have found something ". He dug like hell got the sand out but Dad had put the droppings off a donkey on top of the coins then the sand . The little bugger shifted it just for the coins . We all had a good laugh at dads antics . Got a house up the road from 1593 built with a tunnel for smuggling and several caves one above the other so small rowing boats could get in and haul it booty into the above one and keep it dry , till the tide went out. I know the farmer well and a 16c site of a village but he refuses to give permission. As a lad I used to study the land and worked out the old track ways before the roads took over . If She gets bitten by the bug then she will be out in all weathers , so needs the clothing and boots as well as the tools etc. Happy hunting and Good Luck .
