I guess of talk Morgan won't be too bothered but DVSA have published the draft copy of what is to become the NEW MOT test manual. Its going live on may 20th in an MOT station near you - the date at which over 40 year old cars become MOT exempt by the way.

If you want to have a look - its 131 pages long - I'll pop the link on here. The text with a bold black line against it denotes a change from the current manual.

My intention is still to MOT the Pontiac, unless a mechanic or garage can offer me some sort of 'check-over' that's equivalent to an MOT and would be trusted by a potential future buyer of the car. smile

It is good to see that the conversion of halogen headlamps to HID operation is now specifially not permitted. Many of these conversions have very poor beam control and are dazzling, especially to low seated oncoming drivers in Morgans.

I thought they were already prohibited as HID headlamps require working headlamp washers.

Interestingly that conversion to LED doesn't seem to be prohibited.

I don't know whether the following is related to the new rules and the DVLA are playing around with the website in preparation.

My pre-60 car still shows as MOT exempt on the general information section of the DVLA website and yet it now shows that it needs an MOT in the MOT history section.

Given that only "unmodified" cars are going to be MOT exempt on the 40 year rule I don't see how they're going to verify this by the implementation date.

There were exemptions to the washer requirement and self-levelling mechanism if the MOT tester was satisfied that due to the stiffness of the suspension or the weight of the vehicle, there was limited beam deflection over road undulations. My LR Defender got thru its MOT each year on this basis. HIDs now removed in favour of LEDs.

Thanks Andy,

If I read it correctly the M3W is an L5e vehicle and subject to a class 4 MOT, but without emissions test.

Also, if we can argue that the body "does not have a body of a type which is characteristic of the body of
a four-wheeled vehicle" then no need for a front number plate smile
